The majorero party announces that it does not support the inclusion of Nueva Canarias in the unity pact for 2027, leading to the rupture of the agreement signed with Municipal Assemblies and Juntos por Pájara.
The leadership of Fuerteventura Avanza has unanimously decided not to support the entry of Nueva Canarias into the electoral coalition they were preparing alongside the Municipal Assemblies of Fuerteventura (AMF) and Juntos por Pájara. The decision, communicated to the public this Thursday, breaks the political unity agreement that the three formations had signed in view of the 2027 elections.
The original pact, signed months ago, established that any incorporation of a new force must have the unanimous vote of the three participating parties. However, the proposal to include Nueva Canarias has been met with outright rejection from Fuerteventura Avanza, which argues three strong reasons to veto the operation.
Three reasons explaining the rejection of Nueva Canarias
Firstly, the majorero formation recalls the negative experience of the previous legislature, when they already collaborated with Nueva Canarias. According to their analysis, that alliance did not meet the expected objectives and was marked by interests focused on parliamentary representation. Furthermore, they criticise that Nueva Canarias ran with its own name in Puerto del Rosario instead of promoting a united candidacy led by Fuerteventura Avanza, which, in their view, weakened the common project.
Secondly, they point out that Nueva Canarias has conditioned its entry into the coalition on leading the candidacy for the Parliament of the Canary Islands in the 2027 elections. A demand that Fuerteventura Avanza considers unacceptable because, they claim, it does not respect the internal balance of the original agreement.
Finally, the party led by Rafael Páez rejects the prior red lines that Nueva Canarias intends to establish regarding possible government pacts. They believe that this demand limits the political autonomy of the future alliance and, ultimately, the will of the citizens expressed at the polls.
A political divorce that reconfigures the insular map
The rupture leaves the unity project, which aimed to bring together the alternative forces of Fuerteventura, up in the air. Meanwhile, Fuerteventura Avanza reiterates its commitment to building a political project based on dialogue and respect among organisations, and wishes success to Nueva Canarias, AMF, and Juntos por Pájara in their journey.
The news comes at a crucial moment, less than two years before the 2027 regional and municipal elections, and represents a setback for those who aspired to present a single candidacy that would gather the largest number of political sensitivities on the island. Now, each formation must decide whether to continue alone or seek new allies.
For the majorero electorate, this political saga opens a scenario of uncertainty about what ballots they will find in the polls in two years. What seemed like a path towards unity has twisted, and we will have to wait for the next moves to see if the divorce is final or if, like in any good electoral plot, there are still twists in the script.
