Puerto del Rosario councillor Peña Armas has reported being assaulted by the wife of the general secretary of Coalición Canaria in Fuerteventura, Mario Cabrera, at the Las Arenas Shopping Centre in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Fuerteventura Avanza councillor, Peña Armas, reported on Monday that Mario Cabrera's wife assaulted her while she was shopping at the Las Arenas Shopping Centre in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In a video shared on social media, Armas claims that Cabrera's wife approached her to threaten her with taking her to court and, according to her account, struck her on the arm.
A complaint that transcends politics
Armas, who was accompanied by her underage daughter, explained that Cabrera's wife confronted her over a video she had published days earlier. In that video, the councillor accused the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, and other Coalición Canaria officials of rigging administrative positions to benefit relatives, including Mario Cabrera's son.
“The wife of the general secretary of Coalición Canaria in Fuerteventura approaches me to threaten me, to tell me that on Monday she is going to take me to court for a video I published these days,” Armas recounts in the recording. The councillor adds that the woman hit her on the arm and that she responded: “Madam, if you want to report me, go to court, don’t threaten me and especially don’t touch me, much less in front of my daughter.”
Armas has called on citizens not to remain silent in the face of what she considers an abuse of power. “These caciques still believe that the administrations belong to them. It’s over. They will not silence me,” she declared.
Judicial background of the complainant
The Fuerteventura Avanza councillor is no stranger to the courts. Less than a year ago, she testified in the Court of Instruction number 3 of Puerto del Rosario regarding the so-called ‘Case Odín’, an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office of Las Palmas into municipal contracts awarded between 2021 and 2023 worth €1,129,056. According to the complaint, a significant portion of those contracts benefited Armas's relatives.
In that appearance, Armas denied having received “a single cent” from the companies or individuals with whom the City Council worked during her tenure in charge of Personnel, Works and Procurement. She declared herself a victim of a “political complaint” by the Prosecutor's Office.
Now, the councillor asserts that Cabrera's wife has the right to report her, but not to threaten or assault her. “I am the one who will take her to court,” she warns in the video, stating that there are witnesses to what happened.
Reactions and consequences
So far, neither Mario Cabrera nor Coalición Canaria have commented on Armas's complaint. The majorera politician, known for her harsh criticism of the municipal government of Puerto del Rosario, has once again highlighted the internal tensions on the island.
The incident, which occurred in a shopping centre in the capital of Gran Canaria, has sparked intense debate on social media. While some support Armas and call for an investigation, others recall her own legal troubles. The fact is that controversy is brewing in Fuerteventura, and it doesn’t seem like it will die down anytime soon.
For the residents of Puerto del Rosario, this new episode adds more fuel to the fire of an already heated local politics. The question many are asking is whether this personal confrontation will end up in court or if, as so often happens, it will remain a clash of accusations without legal consequences.
