The capital of Fuerteventura partially inaugurates the renovation of its main avenue, a project costing over three million euros that improves accessibility and recovers spaces for pedestrians.
The Avenida Bulevar Primero de Mayo in Puerto del Rosario now showcases its new look. The first section of the renovation, which runs between the Ciudad Jardín roundabout and the intersection with León y Castillo street, has opened to pedestrian traffic after months of construction. The Canary Islands Government's Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, visited the area on Friday alongside the mayor, David de Vera, to assess the results of an intervention that exceeds three million euros.
Of that amount, €1.28 million comes from the General Directorate of Infrastructure, Sustainability and Tourist Quality, which accounts for just over 42% of the total cost. The rest has been covered by the City Council, which has carried out the work. The intervention has transformed this artery of the capital of Fuerteventura with the reorganisation of the roadway, the widening of sidewalks, and the renewal of the pavement.
Shade areas and new urban furniture have also been incorporated, with the aim of "improving accessibility, favouring the mobility of tourists and residents," as explained by the minister during the visit. De León emphasised that the intervention "not only improves accessibility but also allows for the recovery of deteriorated spaces" and highlighted the added value of being able to enjoy the coastal area of the capital from an elevated position.
A project with partial two-way traffic
The General Director of Infrastructure, Sustainability and Tourist Quality, Héctor Mateo, detailed some technical aspects of the project. The road will maintain two-way traffic for vehicles from the Ciudad Jardín roundabout to the intersection with La Cruz street. From that point to León y Castillo, traffic will be one-way.
Mateo also noted that during the development of the works, it was necessary to adapt the execution timelines to facilitate the completion of the tasks. The partial opening of this section provides relief for residents and merchants, who have endured months of restrictions and traffic cuts on one of the city's busiest roads.
The mayor, David de Vera, positively assessed the opening and stated that "the renovation of the Avenida Bulevar de Primero de Mayo represents a significant improvement for the city, with new pedestrian spaces, enhanced accessibility, modernisation of infrastructure, and a more modern and functional urban image." He also reiterated the municipal gratitude "for the collaboration and patience of residents, merchants, and users during the development of the works."
More projects on the horizon
The Ministry of Tourism and Employment remains committed to Puerto del Rosario beyond this avenue. The department led by Jéssica de León will finance the drafting of the project for the recovery and improvement of Plaza de España, one of the emblematic spaces in the city centre. The collaboration will be structured through a monetary contribution to the public company Gestión de Proyectos Turísticos de Canarias (Gesprotur), which will negotiate with the port city council.
Additionally, following a technical meeting between both administrations, it was agreed to continue working on the drafting of the project for Paseo del Charco, the beach of Las Salinas, and the renovation of the square at the Military Residence. These projects add to the already visible transformation in the Boulevard, which aims to renew the urban image of the capital of Fuerteventura.
The partial opening of the avenue is the first step. It remains to complete the horizontal signage and other details before the final acceptance of the works, after which vehicle circulation will be restored throughout the section. Meanwhile, pedestrians can already enjoy a wider and more accessible walkway, with views of the coastline and new resting areas.
For residents and tourists who travel daily along this route, the improvement represents a notable change in their urban experience. The widening of sidewalks and the addition of furniture invite strolling and stopping, something unthinkable before the renovation. The City Council is confident that the final acceptance will be formalised soon, once the last touches are completed.
The total investment of over three million euros reflects the commitment to the capital of Fuerteventura as a tourist destination and a livable city. With the collaboration of the Canary Islands Government, Puerto del Rosario is advancing in the recovery of its public spaces, combining functionality and aesthetics.
