Deputy Natalia Évora advocates in Parliament for the expansion of the Puerto del Rosario wastewater treatment plant, a €15 million investment that will improve water treatment and reuse on the island.

The Puerto del Rosario Wastewater Treatment Plant is preparing for a historic transformation. The deputy of the Canary Nationalist Group, Natalia Évora, defended this Wednesday in the Parliament of the Canary Islands the expansion of this infrastructure, describing it as "fundamental for the present and future" of Fuerteventura. The project, which will involve an investment of over €15 million, aims to respond to the island's population growth and the need for more efficient water management.

A multi-million investment for the integral water cycle

Évora spoke in the Territorial Policy Commission to learn about the project's roadmap following the approval of funding by the Government of the Canary Islands. The parliamentarian highlighted the approval of multi-year spending that will allow the tendering of the expansion works. The project includes increasing the treatment capacity of the plant, improving sludge dehydration systems, and enhancing the regeneration and reuse of treated water.

As Évora explained, the Hydrological Plans prioritise advancing in the integral water cycle. The goal is to improve the state of groundwater, expand the use of regenerated water, and generate new resources for agriculture. "These actions will also reduce the amount of treated water that is currently discharged into the sea," noted the deputy from Fuerteventura.

Responding to the island's growth

The deputy emphasized that the increasing population in Fuerteventura makes it essential to reinforce such infrastructures. The growing demand for water necessitates planning new investments to ensure adequate supply and more efficient management of this strategic resource for the island. For the residents of Puerto del Rosario and the rest of Fuerteventura, this expansion represents a guarantee of supply and a step towards water sustainability.

Évora valued the coordination between the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and the Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario to advance the project. In her view, this institutional collaboration has allowed for the unlocking of a long-awaited action and taking a decisive step to make it a reality. "It is an example of how working together can solve citizens' problems," she stated.

The expansion of the Puerto del Rosario wastewater treatment plant will not only improve the treatment of wastewater but will also promote the reuse of regenerated water, a key resource for agriculture and tourism in Fuerteventura. The works, which will be tendered soon, are expected to begin in the coming months and have a two-year execution period.
