The mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, took office this Thursday as president of the Southeast Commonwealth, in a ceremony held in the Plenary Hall of the Agüimes Town Hall. He replaces Vanesa Martín, mayor of Ingenio.
The mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, assumed the presidency of the Southeast Commonwealth this Thursday, in a transition that is part of the rotating system governing the entity. Hernández replaces Vanesa Martín, mayor of Ingenio, who will now serve as second vice president, while Francisco José García, mayor of Santa Lucía, will continue as first vice president.
During the ceremony, held in the Plenary Hall of the Agüimes Town Hall, Hernández highlighted the stability of the joint project and assured that the strategic objectives remain fully valid. "We have broad technical and political support to continue advancing," he stated.
Priorities in water and energy
One of the new president's first goals will be to allocate investments to strengthen the hydraulic system of the region. Among the planned actions are increasing the capacity for desalination, purification, and storage of water, as well as improving distribution networks. The aim is to provide the system with greater autonomy and ensure supply to the population.
Hernández also focused on renewable energies. Specifically, he mentioned the implementation of wind infrastructure at the Port of Arinaga, which would help reduce the production costs of water and, consequently, impact the final price paid by users. "It is an opportunity to make the water cycle more efficient and ease the bills for residents," he explained.
Employment, primary sector, and water resources
The president of the Commonwealth also advocated for continuing to promote employment programs, initiatives to support the agricultural sector, and projects to mitigate the decline of underground water resources. "We must ensure alternatives to avoid greater pressure on the aquifers," Hernández warned.
In this context, he highlighted the recent incorporation of the public company Gesplan as a means of the entity, which will facilitate the drafting of projects and the execution of actions related to hydraulic and energy infrastructures. This new tool will provide the Commonwealth with greater responsiveness and more efficient management.
Continuity and consensus
The outgoing president, Vanesa Martín, downplayed the transition and emphasized that it is merely a formality. "Policies and decisions are made consensually," she stated. The Southeast Commonwealth, made up of the municipalities of Agüimes, Ingenio, and Santa Lucía, maintains a rotating presidency system, ensuring balanced representation of the three localities.
For the residents of the region, this new phase means the continuation of projects aimed at improving the water and energy security of the area. The coming weeks will be crucial to determine the specific timelines for the announced investments, especially those related to desalination and wind energy.
