The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, met on Wednesday with residents of El Zardo to gather their proposals. She announced new actions for paving and pest control.
The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, held a meeting on Wednesday with neighbours from the El Zardo neighbourhood at the local community centre, as part of the series of meetings the government group is holding in various parts of the city. During the day, Darias was accompanied by the councillor for the Tamaraceite-San Lorenzo-Tenoya District, Esther Martín; the councillor for Territorial Coordination, Alexis Rodríguez; and the councillor for Youth and Sports, Carla Campoamor.
Representatives from the Zarmidra Neighbourhood Association, chaired by Paco Cárdenes, as well as residents from the nearby neighbourhoods of El Dragonal and La Mina, also attended the meeting. The meeting served to address various demands related to urban maintenance, cleaning, and the improvement of municipal facilities and public transport.
Among the requests made, residents asked for the repair of existing dampness in the community centre, increased clearing in various streets, pruning of palm trees and shrubs on Juan Ponce Pérez street, and improvements to access to the El Zardo Technification Centre through the upgrading of the pavement and clearing of its margins. They also requested actions to enhance the maintenance of sports courts and green areas of the site, as well as parking.
Darias committed to forwarding these demands to the various municipal departments to study their feasibility and scheduling. She also announced that the 2024-2031 Paving Plan, with a projected investment of 40 million euros distributed across the five districts of the city, will allow for the renewal of the pavement on Tiscamanita, Cotillo, and Juan Ponce Pérez streets.
The mayor also explained the functioning of the municipal pest control service, whose contract was awarded during this term and which addresses incidents reported by citizens via the phone 928 448 745 or the email controldeplagas@laspalmasgc.es. This service has doubled its work teams and has strengthened preventive and corrective actions throughout the city.
During the meeting, Darias highlighted the actions carried out in recent years in the neighbourhood and its surroundings, such as the renewal of the sidewalks on Tiscamanita and Camilo Martinón Navarro streets, the implementation of the fifth container, accessibility improvements in El Dragonal, the various phases of the Urban Hygiene Plan, the periodic holding of temporary waste collection points, and the inauguration of the El Zardo Technification Centre, the largest municipal sports facility in the city.
She also informed about the new maintenance and conservation contract for public roads, currently in tender, endowed with 42.8 million euros for the next four years. This contract will increase investment in the maintenance of roadways, sidewalks, and public spaces by 143%, improve universal accessibility, and expedite responses to incidents.
The mayor reminded that the City Council continues to advance in the renewal of other essential services. She noted that the offers submitted for the new waste collection contract, with an investment of 156.9 million euros over eight years, are already in the study phase, which will allow for the incorporation of more than a hundred vehicles, 191 professionals, and over 10,000 new containers to improve the service in all neighbourhoods.
The residents of El Zardo positively valued the municipal government's willingness to listen to their proposals and expressed hope that the announced actions will materialise in the coming months. The City Council plans to schedule the paving works and accessibility improvements according to the timelines of the ongoing contracts.
