The Anzar Cultural Folkloric Association from Telde has participated for the second consecutive year in the Pombal Folklore Festival (Portugal), consolidating its international projection.
The Anzar Cultural Folkloric Association, one of the most emblematic groups of traditional folklore from Telde, has once again shone on the international stage. For the second consecutive year, the group from Telde was invited to participate in the prestigious Pombal Folklore Festival, held on July 26 as part of the Fiestas do Bodo, one of the most important celebrations in the Portuguese region of Alta Extremadura.
The invitation came from the Rancho Típico de Pombal, a historic collective dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the ethnographic heritage of the Portuguese municipality. During the festival, Anzar represented Spain, Gran Canaria, and especially the city of Telde, bringing to Portugal the music, dances, traditional clothing, and popular customs of the Archipelago.
The performance of the Telde group was one of the highlights of the event, which brought together groups from different territories with the aim of promoting cultural exchange through traditions. The members of Anzar showcased the rich ethnographic heritage of the Canary Islands on stage, earning applause from the audience and recognition from local authorities.
During their stay in Pombal, the group members were officially received by the local council. Municipal representatives expressed their gratitude for the participation of the Canarian group and highlighted the importance of strengthening cultural ties between both municipalities. The institutional visit also served to exchange representative gifts and strengthen collaborative ties for future cultural initiatives.
The Anzar Cultural Folkloric Association has been actively engaged for years in the conservation and dissemination of the ethnographic heritage of the Canary Islands. The group recovers dances, music, clothing, and traditional instruments, passing this legacy on to new generations through performances, festivals, and cultural exchanges both within and outside the Islands.
The Councillor for Culture of the Telde City Council, Juan Martel, publicly congratulated the group on this new international success.
“Anzar once again demonstrates that our folklore is an extraordinary ambassador for Telde. Every performance outside the Canary Islands is an opportunity to show who we are, where we come from, and the immense cultural heritage our city possesses. Their work deserves recognition from all,” the councillor emphasized.
In the same vein, the Mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, highlighted the role that cultural entities play in the municipality as cultural representatives.
“When a group like Anzar performs outside Spain, they not only interpret traditional music or dances; they carry with them the history, identity, and sentiment of an entire people. They are true ambassadors of Telde and a source of pride for our city. I congratulate each of their members for continuing to make the name of Telde cross borders and for keeping alive a heritage that unites us as a society,” concluded the local mayor.
Anzar's success in Portugal marks a new milestone for Telde's culture, which continues to project itself abroad thanks to the work of its cultural associations. Participation in the Pombal Folklore Festival not only reinforces Telde's image as a city committed to tradition but also opens the door to future collaborations with other European folkloric entities.
