The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife joined on Thursday in the minute of silence called by the Government Subdelegation to condemn the murder of a 34-year-old woman in Barcelona.
The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife participated on Thursday, July 30, in the minute of silence called by the Government Subdelegation in the province to reject the latest crime of gender violence recorded in Spain. The gathering, which took place at 12:00 in front of the Subdelegation headquarters, served to pay tribute to the 34-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her spouse on July 28 in Barcelona.
Attending the event were the Government Subdelegate in the province, Javier Plata; the Secretary General of the Subdelegation, Rafael Feo Fernández; the Councillor for Citizen Security and Equality, Gladis de León; and the Councillor for Housing, Belén Mesa. Representatives from the municipal corporation and the Government Subdelegation in the Canary Islands were also present, along with staff from both administrations and members of the Local Police of Santa Cruz, Civil Guard, and National Police.
With this new murder, the number of women who have lost their lives due to male violence in Spain rises to 32 so far in 2026. Since the official record began in 2003, a total of 1,373 women have died at the hands of their partners or ex-partners. Furthermore, gender violence has left 22 minors orphaned this year, raising the historical total to 532 children since 2013.
The authorities have reminded the importance of reporting any case of male violence and have made emergency resources available to the public. In a dangerous situation, one can call 112, the National Police (091), or the Civil Guard (062). The ALERTCOPS application is also available, allowing users to send an alert signal with geolocation to the security forces without needing to make a call.
These mechanisms can be activated by the victim themselves or by anyone who has knowledge or suspicion of a case of gender violence. Institutions emphasize that the involvement of society as a whole is essential to eradicate this scourge.
The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reiterated its commitment to the fight against gender violence and has encouraged the public to join awareness and support initiatives for victims. The Councillor for Equality, Gladis de León, has highlighted the need to maintain institutional and social unity to move towards a society free from male violence.
The minute of silence on Thursday is part of the expressions of outrage that are repeated across the country each time a new feminicide occurs. In the Canary Islands, three fatalities due to gender violence were recorded last year, according to data from the central government.
