Rocasa Gran Canaria kicked off pre-season on Wednesday at the Telde pavilion with the support of the mayor, Juan Antonio Peña, and the sports councillor, Cristhian Santana, who wanted to be present at the first training session.
Juan Antonio Peña, mayor of Telde, and Cristhian Santana, councillor for Physical Activity and Sports, visited the municipal pavilion on Wednesday to accompany Rocasa Gran Canaria in their first training session of the 2026-27 season. The team, coaching staff, and club management, led by president Antonio Moreno, received institutional support in an event that marks the beginning of the journey towards national and European challenges.
The Telde mayor addressed the players and coaching staff, highlighting the club's role as an ambassador for the city. “You represent this city wherever you compete. You are our ambassadors both inside and outside Spain, and you make the name of Telde travel across Europe,” Peña stated, also emphasising the backing of the entire municipality. “I want you to feel the support of a whole city that is proud of you and accompanies you in every match,” he added.
The mayor also valued Rocasa's ability to unite the community. “You have achieved something very difficult: uniting a city. You not only excite those who follow handball every weekend. You also awaken the affection and admiration of many people who may not know this sport or even be able to name all the players, but who feel Rocasa as something of their own,” he affirmed.
Peña reminded that the City Council remains committed to improving the municipality's sports infrastructure. “We will continue to work to enhance the sports facilities in the municipality. We will do this through institutional collaboration, hand in hand with the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Government of the Canary Islands, because Rocasa deserves facilities that are in line with its history, its successes, and the prestige it projects for Telde,” he assured.
For his part, sports councillor Cristhian Santana highlighted that the start of pre-season represents the beginning of a new hope for the entire city. “Every season that begins is an opportunity to continue making history. Rocasa has been demonstrating for many years that hard work, perseverance, and commitment are the best path to success,” Santana indicated, adding that the club is a reference for young Canarians.
Rocasa Gran Canaria faces an exciting season, aiming to compete for national titles and with the added incentive of returning to European competitions. The team, which has established itself as one of the most prestigious in Spanish women's handball, will once again carry the name of Telde across various countries on the continent.
The pre-season, which began with this first session, will be demanding. The coaching staff will work on the physical, tactical, and technical preparation of the team before the official start of competitions. The squad, which maintains the core from previous seasons, arrives with high morale after the successes achieved in previous years.
The Telde City Council wanted to convey its best wishes to the entire Rocasa family for a season that excites a city accustomed to celebrating the successes of a club that has made women's sport one of the great symbols of identity for the municipality. With each training session, trip, and match, Rocasa not only defends a badge: it carries with it the name, pride, and feeling of all Telde.
The team's first official match is scheduled for late August or early September, when the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola begins. Until then, the team will work behind closed doors at the municipal pavilion, with double sessions on some days and friendly matches to be announced soon.
