Canary Ports has signed the contract to prepare the Explanada del Castillete street in the port of Mogán. The project, with a budget of €720,000, will transform approximately 3,000 square metres of surface.
Canary Ports has given the green light to the renovation of the Explanada del Castillete, one of the key points of the port of Mogán. The contract for the works, signed on 23 July, involves an investment of €720,000 (including IGIC) to transform a stretch of 240 metres in length and 10 metres in width, amounting to approximately 3,000 square metres of surface.
The consortium formed by Hermanos Medina La Herradura, S.L. and Constructora Lantigua e Hijos, S.L. has been awarded the project, which has an execution period of six months. The works are expected to start next September, according to the public entity.
The managing director of Canary Ports, José Gilberto Moreno, highlighted that the intervention aims to “better organise the uses of the space, enhance safety, and provide a more cared-for, accessible image that is coherent with the character of the port of Mogán.” Moreno emphasised that the work combines “urban improvement, port functionality, and attention to the needs of residents, professionals, and visitors.”
The project will focus on creating a single platform that facilitates coexistence between pedestrians and vehicles. To achieve this, circulation areas will be differentiated using new pavements, employing basalt cobblestones and chasnera stone, materials that will maintain the aesthetic of the marina. The pavement of the esplanade in front of the fishermen's guild will also be renewed.
One of the most significant changes will be the reorganisation of circulation. The two lanes for vehicles will be moved towards the embankment, allowing for an expansion of pedestrian space. Additionally, bollards and a new marine-grade aluminium railing will be installed to enhance safety. Parking will be reduced to four professional use spaces and a specific area for loading and unloading.
The project also includes the execution of a new rainwater drainage network, the renewal of public lighting, and the installation of low-maintenance urban furniture that is highly resistant to the marine environment, such as pergolas, benches, and bins.
With this action, Canary Ports reinforces its commitment to modernising the autonomous ports. “Our goal is for the autonomous ports to be safer, more comfortable spaces that are better integrated into their surroundings,” stated Moreno.
The Explanada del Castillete is a heavily trafficked area for both residents and tourists, being in the heart of the port of Mogán, known for its canals and maritime atmosphere. The work will improve accessibility and urban quality in the area, providing a more functional and attractive environment.
The residents of Mogán and visitors to the port will notice the changes starting in September, when the works begin. During the six months of construction, some traffic disruptions and parking relocations are expected, although Canary Ports has not yet detailed the diversion plan. The investment of €720,000 represents a significant boost for the port infrastructure of Mogán, which receives thousands of tourists each year and is a key point for fishing and nautical leisure activities in the south of Gran Canaria.
