The municipal plenary has approved the honours for 2026, which will be presented on September 18 at the Víctor Jara theatre. The Idols of Tirajana will also be awarded to various entities and individuals.
The Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council approved on Thursday in an ordinary plenary session the appointments for Honours and Distinctions for 2026. Doctor José Sánchez Alvarado, originally from Sardina del Sur, will receive the title of Favourite Son, while municipal social worker Hortensia Pérez Cabrera will be named Adoptive Daughter. The institutional ceremony will take place on Friday, September 18, at the Víctor Jara theatre.
The mayor, Francisco García, justified the proposal for Sánchez Alvarado by highlighting that "he is a doctor who has dedicated more than four decades to caring for the health of several generations of residents of Santa Lucía de Tirajana and has become a deeply respected figure for his closeness, humanity, and vocation for service." In the case of Pérez Cabrera, García emphasised her "important work over decades in the Social Services of our municipality, during very significant years because with the birth of the Canary Autonomous Community, there was a decentralisation of Social Services towards the municipalities."
In addition to these two titles, the plenary has agreed to grant the Idols of Tirajana in various categories. In the social field, the local assembly of the Red Cross in Santa Lucía de Tirajana is recognised; in the economic field, businessman José Bolaños; in sports, municipal worker Antonio Ramírez; in identity, the Folklore Group Amor Canario; in culture, the municipal Animation Workshop and Francisco Alemán; in solidarity, Antonia Alí; and in equality and diversity, Noelia Vera.
The mayor explained the merits of each: "José Bolaños León is a significant example of family entrepreneurship in the Canary Islands, due to his effort, perseverance, and adaptability." Of Antonio Ramírez Santana, he said that "for more than forty years he developed an intense role as a public employee, actively participating in the planning, organisation, and consolidation of a good part of the sports programmes." He also valued the work of the Folklore Group Amor Canario in researching and disseminating Canarian folklore. Regarding the Animation Workshop, he noted that "it has managed to become a benchmark for citizen participation, collective commitment, and artistic creativity over the last four decades, with the prominent role of its first coordinator Paco Alemán." Concerning Antonia Gloria Alí Santana, he highlighted her commitment to founding the Association Women for Peace and Solidarity Action with Palestine. Of Noelia Vera Rodríguez, the mayor emphasised that "she is an example of bravery, authenticity, and commitment to oneself, values that have favoured greater visibility and normalisation of affective-sexual diversity."
The plenary was held at the El Paradero Senior Centre in Santa Lucía town centre due to ongoing works at the Town Hall. The session also approved actions for the 2027 financial year of the Cooperation Plan with the Municipalities (PCA 2024-2027) of Santa Lucía de Tirajana. A total of €158,526 will be allocated to prepare a plot as a public municipal parking; €603,095 for the refurbishment of the San Rafael square; and €400,000 for the improvement of the Pozo Izquierdo Supply Network.
In the section of motions, Nueva Canarias–Frente Amplio Canarista (NC-FAC) presented a motion in support and solidarity with the Venezuelan people in light of the recent earthquake, which was unanimously approved as an institutional declaration with contributions from other groups. The Vox Municipal Group presented a motion requesting the gradual implementation of shaded areas in playgrounds, which was rejected by the majority. Another motion from Vox regarding the abandonment of plots next to the ICOT Health Centre and the safety of the surrounding area did not prosper. NC-FAC presented a motion on municipal public housing policies, supported by all groups except Vox. The La Fortaleza Municipal Group proposed a comprehensive maintenance plan for sports facilities, which did not gain majority support, but their motion for the recovery and enhancement of the coastline of Santa Lucía de Tirajana was approved with the majority support of the plenary.
The residents of Santa Lucía will be able to attend the award ceremony on September 18 at the Víctor Jara theatre, where the contributions of individuals and entities that have contributed to the development of the municipality will be recognised.
