The Gáldar City Council inaugurated this Thursday the two upper padel courts at the Venancio Monzón Sports City, in San Isidro, after a rehabilitation costing 30,570 euros that includes new grass, LED lighting, and fencing.
The Gáldar City Council has launched this Thursday the two upper padel courts at the Venancio Monzón Mendoza Sports City, in the San Isidro neighbourhood, after completing the rehabilitation works promoted by the Department of Physical Activity, Sport and Health. The total investment amounts to 30,570 euros, a sum that has allowed for a complete renewal of facilities that had long been in need of an upgrade.
The works included leveling the pavement, installing new synthetic grass and a new net, as well as a comprehensive repair of the perimeter fencing and glass panels. Additionally, LED lighting has been installed, which improves both safety and the quality of play, especially during hours of reduced natural light. Users can now make reservations through the website set up by the council: reservasdeportivas.galdar.es.
The Mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa, highlighted during the inauguration that "we continue to take steps to improve our sports infrastructure and offer quality facilities to the thousands of users who make use of them each week. Sport is a priority for this City Council because it contributes to improving the health and quality of life of our residents." Sosa announced that "this action will not be the last, as we are already working to renovate the two remaining courts and continue modernising the Venancio Monzón Sports City with new projects such as the expansion of the gym."
For his part, the Councillor for Physical Activity, Sport and Health, Ancor Bolaños, emphasised that "padel is experiencing a moment of enormous growth and is one of the most in-demand sports in the north of Gran Canaria. This was a highly anticipated action by our users, who deserved to have courts in the best possible conditions." Bolaños added that "with this rehabilitation, we respond to that demand and continue to bet on expanding and improving the municipal sports offer."
The Venancio Monzón Sports City is one of the most important sports facilities in the municipality, with a wide range of offerings that include football, basketball, swimming, and now, renovated padel courts. Padel has become a discipline with a notable increase in practitioners in the northern region of Gran Canaria in recent years, making intervention in these courts necessary.
With this action, the Gáldar City Council aims not only to improve the experience of local athletes but also to attract players from other areas of the island. The investment of 30,570 euros has been financed with municipal funds, and the council is already working on the next phase: the rehabilitation of the two remaining padel courts, which will join those already renovated.
The residents of Gáldar and nearby municipalities will be able to enjoy these facilities from now on, with an online reservation system that facilitates access. The schedule for the courts will adapt to that of the Sports City, which opens from Monday to Sunday depending on demand.
