The Insular Meeting of Seniors brought together more than 800 people in Hermigua on Sunday, with tributes to Francisco Mesa and Doris Cabeza.
The municipality of Hermigua became the epicentre of intergenerational coexistence in La Gomera this Sunday. Over 800 seniors from the six municipalities of the island participated in a new edition of the Insular Meeting of Seniors.
The event, organised by the island's Cabildo and the Hermigua Town Hall, aimed to strengthen social ties among senior associations. The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, presided over the event and highlighted the fundamental role of these generations in the island's development.
Acknowledgment of achievements
One of the most emotional moments was the tribute to Francisco Mesa, former president of the Valle Gran Rey Senior Association. His dedication and social work were recognised by attendees with warm applause.
Doris Cabeza, a key figure in popular Gomera music, was also honoured. The organisation aimed to highlight her contributions to local orchestras and her role as a female artist on the island. The tribute to Gomera women artists was one of the key themes of the meeting.
The music was provided by Los Huaracheros and Los Sabandeños, who entertained the evening with performances that got attendees dancing. The festive atmosphere was maintained throughout the day.
Call for more resources
Casimiro Curbelo took the opportunity to demand more public policies and better resources for seniors. The island president insisted that institutions must ensure their full participation in social life and improve their quality of life.
The councillor for Social Services, Rosa Elena García, valued the high participation and the work of the associations. She noted that these groups keep the social life of their users active and promote personal autonomy.
The mayor of Hermigua, Solveida Clemente, expressed her pride in hosting the event. She stated that seniors shape the identity of the towns and that the municipality felt honoured to welcome them.
For attendees, the meeting was a day of reunion and joy. Many shared experiences and reminisced about old times while enjoying the prepared programme.
The day concluded with a commitment to repeat the experience next year. The organisation is already working to ensure that the next edition maintains the spirit of coexistence and recognition that characterises this event.
