The Lanzarote sailor Alberto Morales has been crowned runner-up of Spain in the WASZP class, after an intense competition in Mar Menor (Murcia). His brother Miguel Ángel Morales finished second in the youth category.

The Lanzarote native Alberto Morales achieved the runner-up position in the WASZP Spain championship during a competition held this week in the waters of Mar Menor, Murcia. The event, which brought together 66 boats of international character, was marked by difficult weather conditions, with little wind and high temperatures that forced the cancellation of the first day.

An exhilarating competition in Mar Menor

The fleet, composed of sailors from various countries, could only complete six races in total: four on the second day and two in the final. The extreme heat caused constant changes in pressure and wind shifts, which forced participants to continuously adjust their strategy on the water.

Alberto Morales, who competed under the sponsorship of the Royal Canary Sailing Federation, finished in third place overall, but as the first Spaniard in the standings, he was crowned national runner-up. The Valencian Antonio Gasperini took the title of champion of Spain, while the Frenchman Matteo Chaboud secured second place overall.

The distance between them was minimal: only five points separated Morales from Gasperini. Interestingly, this edition reversed the result of 2025, when Alberto was the champion and Gasperini the runner-up.

Miguel Ángel Morales, a youth promise

The other great joy for Lanzarote sailing came from Miguel Ángel Morales, Alberto's brother. The young sailor finished in ninth place in the overall standings and secured second place in the youth category, just two points behind the Galician Jorge Astiazarán, the youth champion.

Both brothers competed representing the Royal Canary Sailing Federation and were supported by sponsors such as Lanzarote ESD, Marina Rubicón, Turismark, and Lanzarote Sails.

Preparations for the European Championship

Following this success, the Lanzarote sailors are already looking towards their next big challenge: the WASZP European Championship, which will also be held in the waters of Mar Menor. For Alberto Morales, the national runner-up title represents a boost in morale and a confirmation of his high competitive level.

For sailing enthusiasts in Lanzarote, these results strengthen the island's talent pool and demonstrate that, despite the distance from continental training centres, talent and dedication can shine on the national and international stage.
