The Lanzarote Summer Challenge, the most important CrossFit tournament in Spain and one of the largest in Europe, will take place in Arrecife on July 11 and 12. A total of 224 competitors from 13 countries will participate, with new features such as mixed teams and a water event.
The Islote de la Fermina, Playa de El Reducto, and the Puerto Deportivo de La Marina will be the luxurious venues for the Lanzarote Summer Challenge 2026, which will turn Arrecife into the European capital of CrossFit from July 11 to 12. A total of 224 athletes, selected from over 800 applicants worldwide, will compete in mixed categories aimed at gender parity.
A tournament with record international participation
This edition is the most international in history. For the first time, Latin American countries such as Argentina, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic will participate, alongside Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Japan, and others. In total, 13 nations will be represented.
Among the notable names are top world athletes Victoria Reyes, Helena Carratalá, Fabi Beneito, and Bryan Hernández. Athletes of European stature such as Silvia García, Martín Cuervo, Laura Plaza, Carmen Pericet, Alejandro de la Guardia, and Rita García will also compete.
New features: mixed teams, water event, and more prizes
The major novelty is that all categories —RX, Intermediate, Scale, and Master— will be contested by mixed teams, with an equal number of men and women. This is the first CrossFit competition in Spain with total parity.
Additionally, a water event will debut, promising to surprise, and materials and challenges have been renewed. The prize pool amounts to nearly 5,000 euros, distributed among all categories, which is quite unusual in this sport.
Another technological innovation: live streaming of the events and replays through an app and a giant screen at the event, allowing the audience to follow the ranking in real-time.
Tourism and economic impact in Lanzarote
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, highlighted that the event "showcases our wealth and mixes sports tourism with economic diversification, benefiting the entire coastal restoration sector."
For his part, Héctor Mateo, General Director of Infrastructure, Sustainability, and Tourist Quality of the Canary Government, noted that "we have invested 54 million euros in promoting events like this, which offer new tourist experiences and profitability."
The Sports Councillor of the Cabildo, Juan Monzón, described the tournament as "well-established" and valued its contribution to the island's visibility. Héctor Fernández from SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote emphasized that "sports are a great tourist driver" and that outdoor events like this "provide an important visual spectacle."
The championship director, Carmen Vicente, thanked the institutions "that allow us to improve each year" and highlighted that "it is magical to hold an event of this level in such iconic places."
For the local audience, the event offers a unique opportunity to see the best in the world in action, with free access to the beaches and port. Additionally, local restaurants and shops expect a significant increase in visitors during that weekend.
The events will begin on Saturday, July 11, at 9:00 AM at the Islote de la Fermina and will continue until Sunday. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday afternoon at the Puerto Deportivo de La Marina.
