After years of failed attempts, the former headquarters of the Cabildo on Calle Real looks renewed. The work has included the replacement of tiles and the elimination of damp.
The iconic building of the Yellow House, located on Calle Real in Arrecife, unveiled a renewed image this weekend after a profound intervention that lasted several months. The former headquarters of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, one of the most photographed buildings in the capital, has had its three façades repaired with an investment of €195,000.
The work, carried out by the public company Tragsa, included the replacement of lost or damaged tiles, as well as the restoration of walls and the elimination of damp affecting the interior. All of this, according to the technical project approved in the summer of 2025 by the Arrecife City Council, was done under criteria of minimal intervention and maximum reversibility, to preserve the heritage value of the building.
An emblem for the island
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancorr, highlighted that the renovation "responds to this Government's commitment to care for the historic buildings that exist on the island." In statements made at the end of 2025, he assured that the goal is for both residents and tourists to be able to "enjoy and admire an emblem for the island in the best conditions."
For her part, the vice president María Jesús Tovar emphasized the importance of the capital having an emblematic building in perfect condition. The Yellow House, built in the early 20th century, has witnessed the island's history and is one of the landmarks of the historic centre of Arrecife.
A path with obstacles
The renovation has not been a bed of roses. In 2023, the company Progresa Cinco Infraestructuras Eficientes withdrew from the works, forcing the Cabildo to seek a new company. Ultimately, Tragsa took charge of the project, which also included improvements to the interior, such as the repair of decorative ornaments and the refurbishment of the clock room.
The residents of Arrecife have viewed the result positively. "It is a pride that the Yellow House shines again as it did before," commented a local resident yesterday. The restoration has returned the original colour to the façades, with yellow tones and white details that enhance its historicist architecture.
A boost for cultural tourism
The recovery of the Yellow House represents a new attraction for visitors strolling along Calle Real, one of the commercial and tourist arteries of Arrecife. Vice President Tovar recalled that the building is "an emblem" for the island, and its refurbishment contributes to strengthening the cultural offering of the capital.
With this intervention, the Cabildo of Lanzarote adds a new action to its plan for the conservation of the island's heritage. It remains to be seen whether the building, which for years housed the headquarters of the Cabildo, will open its doors to the public regularly or if it will be allocated to new cultural uses. For now, the residents of Arrecife can already enjoy its renewed appearance.
