Aemet has issued a special warning for the arrival of a heatwave in the Canaries starting Wednesday. In Lanzarote, municipalities like San Bartolomé could reach 39 degrees on Saturday.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a special warning for the imminent arrival of a heatwave in the Canaries, the first of the summer, which will start to be felt from this Wednesday, July 29. The probability that the forecasts will be met exceeds 70%, according to the agency.
In Lanzarote, the highest temperatures are expected in the municipality of San Bartolomé, where the thermometer could reach 39 degrees on Saturday. In Tías, the maximums will hover around 36 degrees. Other municipalities on the island will also register progressive increases throughout the week.
For a heat episode to be considered a heatwave, two conditions must be met according to the Aemet's National Climate Data Bank Service: it must last at least three days and 10% of the measuring stations must record maximum temperatures above the 95th percentile. Until now, the Canaries had only experienced heat episodes, not a heatwave as such.
The thermal rise will begin on Wednesday in La Palma, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. On this latter island, temperatures are expected to reach 37 degrees that same day. On Thursday, thermometers will continue to rise slightly across the archipelago, exceeding 38 degrees in Gran Canaria. In Lanzarote, maximums of 30 degrees are expected in Tías and Teguise that day, with subsequent increases.
On Friday the 31st, the heat will intensify more moderately in the eastern islands. In Gran Canaria and the interior of Fuerteventura, temperatures could reach between 37 and 38 degrees. Looking towards the weekend, although there is still uncertainty, Aemet predicts that Gran Canaria and the interior of Fuerteventura will again register 37 degrees.
Aemet has issued a yellow warning for heat in the south of Gran Canaria starting Wednesday. The rest of the islands currently do not have any active warnings, although the situation could change if the predictions are confirmed.
In addition to the heat, it is expected that the humid layer will gradually descend in the archipelago, which will combine with a warm environment and the presence of dust. On the mainland, several regions will be at a significant and even extraordinary danger level during the central hours of the day.
For residents and visitors of Lanzarote, it is recommended to take extra precautions: avoid sun exposure during peak hours, stay hydrated, and pay special attention to the most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and children. Local authorities may activate heat protocols if temperatures exceed established thresholds.
