Aemet issues a yellow warning for high temperatures in Lanzarote for this Monday, with highs of 34 degrees. The heat pre-alert extends to the entire archipelago from Sunday.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated a yellow warning for high temperatures for this Monday, July 6, in Lanzarote. Mercury is expected to reach 34 degrees, especially in the interior areas of the southeast of the island.

The warning will be in effect from 11:00 to 20:00 hours. The warm air mass of African origin affecting the archipelago will be responsible for this thermal spike, which will also be felt in Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, both under a yellow warning.

The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert for high temperatures in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and in the rest of the islands, from 08:00 hours this Sunday, July 5. The measure aims to anticipate the effects of heat on the population.

A Sunday of transition towards intense heat

This Sunday, temperatures will begin to rise significantly in Gran Canaria and areas of the interior of Fuerteventura, extending to Lanzarote throughout the day. The thermal peak on the island is expected between Tuesday and Thursday, when the heat could intensify even more.

According to Aemet, the progression will be clear: Monday will be the first day with a warning, but from Tuesday temperatures could exceed 34 degrees in some areas. Residents of Lanzarote should prepare for a week of intense heat, with particular attention to the elderly and children.

The Canary Islands Government recommends constant hydration, avoiding sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day, and paying attention to symptoms of heatstroke. The pre-alert means that emergency services are in a state of monitoring and coordination.

Practical tips to cope with the heatwave

For residents in Lanzarote, authorities advise keeping homes cool by closing blinds and windows during the day, and ventilating at night. It is also important not to leave people or pets inside parked vehicles.

In the interior areas of the southeast, such as Tías or San Bartolomé, where the heat will be more noticeable, it is recommended to limit outdoor activities. The beach, although tempting, is not always a safe refuge if precautions are not taken: a sunshade, sunscreen, and plenty of water are essential.

The pre-alert for high temperatures will remain active as long as the episode lasts, which could extend until Thursday. Aemet will update warnings based on the evolution of the African air mass.
