The Yaiza Town Hall has put out to tender the construction of the library and sociocultural centre in Playa Blanca for 3.9 million euros, a project long demanded by the residents.
The Yaiza Town Hall has taken a decisive step to provide Playa Blanca with a first-class cultural and social facility. The council has published the tender for the works of the new library and sociocultural centre, with a base budget of 3.9 million euros. The project, which has been a historical demand of the residents, will be located on a municipal plot in the centre of the tourist town.
The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, has highlighted that this investment "responds to a real need of the population of Playa Blanca, which has grown considerably in recent years and lacked an adequate public space for reading, studying, and community activities." The building, according to the project, will have a constructed area of about 2,500 square metres spread over two floors.
The ground floor will house the library area, with a general reading room, newspaper library, children's and youth area, and a space for consulting digital resources. It will also include a multipurpose room for exhibitions and cultural events. The first floor will be dedicated to the sociocultural centre, with training classrooms, workshops, offices for associations, and a meeting room.
The estimated execution period for the works is 18 months from the awarding of the contract. Interested companies can submit their bids until May 15, as stated in the contracting profile of the Yaiza Town Hall. The funding comes from municipal funds, with a specific allocation approved in the 2025 budgets.
The project has been designed by the municipal technical services, with a sustainable and energy-efficient approach. The installation of photovoltaic solar panels for self-consumption, low-energy climate control systems, and recycled materials in construction is planned. Additionally, the building will be accessible for people with reduced mobility, with ramps and an elevator.
The library and sociocultural centre in Playa Blanca adds to other similar facilities in the municipality, such as the Yaiza capital library and the sociocultural centre of Las Breñas. However, Playa Blanca, with more than 10,000 registered inhabitants and a high tourist influx, was the most populated area lacking such a service.
The residents have positively valued the tender. The Playa Blanca residents' association has stated that "we have been demanding a space like this for years, where young people can study, the elderly can meet, and associations can carry out their activities." They have also requested that a wide schedule and an efficient lending service be guaranteed.
The Yaiza Town Hall has informed that, once the works are completed, the management of the centre will be municipal, although it does not rule out collaboration with cultural and social entities in the municipality. The aim is for the space to become a meeting point and a catalyst for the cultural life of Playa Blanca.
The tender has been published in the Official Bulletin of the Province of Las Palmas and on the public sector contracting platform. Interested construction companies must demonstrate experience in public facility works and submit a detailed technical report. The contracting committee will evaluate the bids based on economic and technical criteria.
With this project, the Yaiza Town Hall takes another step in its plan to improve public infrastructure, which also includes the renovation of the town square and the construction of a new playground in Playa Blanca. The library and sociocultural centre is shaping up to be one of the most important investments of the term.
