The Club de Lucha Tinajo has presented 'Tinajo para Todos', the first inclusive canarian wrestling team in the province of Las Palmas. The pioneering initiative in the Canary Islands aims to integrate people with disabilities into this traditional sport.
The Club de Lucha Tinajo has taken a historic step by creating 'Tinajo para Todos', the first inclusive canarian wrestling team in the province of Las Palmas. The official presentation took place this Tuesday in the Plenary Hall of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, with the presence of local and regional authorities.
The mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, and the councillor for Sports, Vianney Rodríguez, expressed their congratulations to the club for this initiative which, in their words, demonstrates that canarian wrestling is a universal sport close to the roots of society. Machín announced that a municipal reception will be held next week to honour the athletes.
The president of the Club de Lucha Tinajo, Yurena Cubas, explained that the idea arose upon seeing that some young people were already practicing inclusive basketball. They decided to create a canarian wrestling team for them, training for more than six months. The name 'Tinajo para Todos' reflects the goal of including without conditions or barriers.
This team is the second of its kind in the Canary Islands, only behind another in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Cubas highlighted the pride it brings to the club to connect with the solidarity essence of the people of Lanzarote. The team aims to be an open space where values such as effort, camaraderie, and overcoming empower the athletes.
Also present at the event were the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort; the general director of Disability of the Government of the Canary Islands, Dulce María Gutiérrez; the councillor for Sports, Juan Monzón; and the councillor for Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña. All supported the initiative.
The Tinajo City Council has highlighted that this action positions Lanzarote as the first island in the province of Las Palmas to have an adapted canarian wrestling team. Additionally, it paves the way for other traditional disciplines to adopt inclusive models.
