The president of CB Canarias, Aniano Cabrera, claims that the club has overcome the economic crisis and faces the upcoming season in the Eurocup with optimism.
The president of CB Canarias, Aniano Cabrera, has given an interview in which he analyses the current situation of La Laguna Tenerife, after overcoming the delicate economic situation he found upon taking office. Cabrera expresses "optimism" for the future and confirms that the budget for the 2026/27 squad will be similar to that of the last season, conditioned by the long-term injury of Rokas Giedraitis.
One of the most relevant decisions in recent months has been the change of competition: La Laguna Tenerife will compete in the Eurocup next season, leaving behind the Basketball Champions League (BCL). Cabrera explains that this decision responds to the need to "breathe" and seek new challenges. "I think it wasn't an easy decision, but we needed a change of competition, precisely for that, to breathe. To have different rivals, new challenges, new horizons, and to test ourselves in something that I don't know if it's better or worse, but it is different. The entity needed that change," he states.
Regarding the departure of the previous coach, Txus Vidorreta, Cabrera denies that it was a forced decision. "I don't think it ended up being a necessary departure. In the end, when you are in one place for so long, you wear out. The travel, the demands, or figuring out what to invent to stay another year with the best, these are things that take their toll," he points out. The president adds that "I don't think his departure was a necessity, but circumstances that arise. Nothing more."
As for the squad, despite rumours of a possible overhaul, the changes have been minimal. Cabrera values the continuity of the group: "Well, there have been changes... But you have to try to find what is best for the club, and that's where you often assess what you have. And I believe that the solidity, leadership, and commitment that this team has always shown are aspects that lead you to maintain continuity in the group and make adjustments." The president highlights that "this group helps you win. This group wins games, and that allows you to look for just three or four tweaks to maintain the competitive level."
Confidence in the new coach, Jaka Lakovic, is total. Cabrera emphasises that "when we talked to Jaka, he understood and valued many positive aspects that this group possesses." The president is ambitious and believes that the team can continue to compete at the top level in the competitions they participate in.
The fans of CB Canarias, who fill the La Laguna pavilion every matchday, eagerly await the start of the 2026/27 season, with the debut in the Eurocup and the continuity of a block that has demonstrated its competitiveness in recent years.
