The Education Department allocates over €21 million to 420 projects in 293 educational centres across the archipelago during the summer period, the largest simultaneous deployment of works in the community's history.
The Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports Department of the Government of the Canary Islands has launched this summer the largest plan of simultaneous works in public educational centres in the history of the archipelago. With an investment exceeding €21 million, 420 projects will be executed in 293 educational infrastructures spread across the eight islands.
Councillor Poli Suárez presented the balance of the ongoing works this Wednesday, coinciding with the signing of collaboration agreements with five municipalities in Gran Canaria: Agaete, Artenara, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucía de Tirajana and Valsequillo. These agreements, amounting to nearly €4 million, will allow interventions in fifteen educational centres on the island.
“Never before has the Government of the Canary Islands executed so many works simultaneously in the public educational network,” highlighted Suárez. “It is an unprecedented effort to continue improving the educational infrastructures of our land and to offer the best possible conditions to the management teams, teachers and students,” he added.
The councillor acknowledged the historical neglect of many facilities but emphasized that actions have been expedited to recover lost time. “We have expedited actions and methods to recover the time that has been lost and to respond to the urgent demands of the educational community of the islands,” he stated.
The actions include everything from large projects to improvement and conservation interventions. Among the most notable are the expansion of the new CEIP Gran Tarajal and the works at CEIP Francisco Navarro Artiles in Fuerteventura; the reconstruction of CEIP La Laguna in La Palma; the construction of the new CEIP Alexis Tejera in Lanzarote; the improvement of CEIP La Lomada in La Gomera; the replacement of the roof of IES Garoé and the roofing of the playground at CEIP Taibique in El Hierro; and the expansion of IES Roque Amagro in Gran Canaria.
A significant part of the investment is allocated to adapting the centres to current climatic conditions. Shade spaces will be created in 62 educational centres, with an investment of over €2.6 million, and naturalization projects will be developed in another 55 centres, equipped with more than €2.3 million. Additionally, six new sports court roofs will be constructed (over €3.2 million) and another 26 actions will be executed to improve sports facilities (over €1.1 million).
The Department has also allocated over €3 million to 54 actions in Aulas Enclave, reinforcing the commitment to inclusive education. At the same time, more than €2.7 million will be invested in 78 actions to repair damage caused by recent storms in 77 educational centres, while another 127 interventions, with an investment close to €2.9 million, will resolve issues detected in over a hundred centres. The programme includes the removal of asbestos in five educational centres, with an investment exceeding €1.4 million, and another seven large-scale actions that exceed €1.7 million.
The agreements signed with the municipalities of Gran Canaria are part of the inter-administrative collaboration model promoted by the Department through the General Directorate of Infrastructures and Equipment, coordinated by Iván G. Carro. Since the beginning of the legislature, this model has allowed the mobilization of nearly €25 million through agreements signed with 25 island and municipal administrations in the Canary Islands.
“We want the municipalities themselves to be able to execute these actions more swiftly, responding to the needs of the centres more quickly and effectively,” explained Suárez. The works are being carried out during the summer period to minimize disruptions to the educational community and will be completed before the start of the next school year.
