The La Laguna City Council continues its policy of a 5% discount for all municipal taxes paid via direct debit. This measure, which has been in effect for some time, also applies to the new waste collection fee for households, one of the issues that has raised the most questions among residents in recent months.
The Councillor for Finance, Paqui Rivero, explained that those who already had their tax payments set up for previous years will not need to take any additional steps to continue benefiting from the discount on the new waste fee. “We have been one of the few municipalities that has respected the direct debit for those who had already applied this measure,” she pointed out.
The discount can be requested up to two months before the start of the voluntary period for each tax. For this year's waste fee, the voluntary period has been exceptionally set from September 1 to November 20. Looking ahead to 2027, the expectation is that payment can be made starting from April 1.
New taxpayers — for example, those who acquire a home or register for an activity — can activate direct debit for the next tax year. In these cases, the City Council will send an individual notification with the settlement and the various payment options available.
In addition to the waste fee, the 5% discount applies to other taxes such as the Property Tax (IBI), the economic activities tax, the mechanical traction vehicles tax, the fee for installing advertisements in public domain, kiosks, vehicle entry, and public road reservation. The direct debit charge is usually made between 10 and 15 days before the voluntary deadline expires.
The City Council also reminds that there is a personalised payment plan, with no additional interest, available until November 1. This option allows taxpayers to split the amount of taxes without extra cost.
Direct debit can be managed through the Virtual Taxpayer Office or at the in-person service offices of the City Council. Councillor Rivero has insisted that “it is a convenient and advantageous method for citizens, which avoids trips and forgetfulness, and also represents a direct saving of 5%.”
The measure aims to promote direct debit as a regular payment method, which also facilitates the planning of municipal revenues. With this discount, the La Laguna City Council intends to reduce delinquency and streamline tax management while providing an economic benefit to residents.
