The City Council of La Laguna will allocate 75,000 euros to subsidise driving licences for young people aged 18 to 30 registered in the municipality. Each beneficiary can receive up to 500 euros for tuition fees, charges or training at local driving schools.
The Department of Education and Youth of the City Council of La Laguna has announced a new line of aid to help young people in the municipality afford their driving licences. The initiative, funded with 75,000 euros from the 2026 municipal budget, will allow subsidies of up to 500 euros per beneficiary to cover the costs of this training process.
The measure aims to reduce one of the economic barriers that most affect access to employment and the independence of young people. According to the Councillor for Education and Youth, Sergio Eiroa, the driving licence "has ceased to be merely a credential to drive a vehicle; today it is, in many cases, an essential tool for accessing a job."
Eiroa emphasised that the call represents "a firm commitment to equal opportunities," as it invests "in the talent and future of our youth." The aid can be used for tuition fees, exam fees, teaching materials, and theoretical and practical training carried out at driving schools in the municipality.
The Councillor for Local Development, Domingo Galván, stressed that companies demand "more prepared profiles with greater mobility capacity," so administrations must help eliminate obstacles that hinder young people's integration into the productive fabric. The call will favour those who need it most, such as job seekers or those registered in the National Youth Guarantee System.
Requirements and deadlines for the call
Young people aged between 18 and 30, registered in La Laguna for at least six months and enrolled in a driving school in the municipality, can apply for this aid. Expenses incurred between January 1, 2026, and the deadline set by the call, which will be published in the Official Bulletin of the Province, will be eligible for subsidy.
The deadline for submitting applications will be 20 calendar days from the day after the official publication. The aid will be granted on a competitive basis, with evaluation criteria prioritising young job seekers, people with disabilities, large or single-parent families, and economically independent young people.
The call includes a maximum amount of 500 euros per beneficiary, charged to the 75,000 euro budget. If applications exceed the available funds, distribution will be made according to the regulatory bases. The department will inform about the opening of the application period through municipal channels and their social media.
The president of the Federation of Driving Schools of the Canary Islands (FEACA), Javier Báez, valued the initiative as a response to "a real need for many young people," as obtaining the licence represents "a significant investment for many families." Báez highlighted that this aid "not only benefits young people but also values the work of the driving schools in the municipality" as key agents in road training.
For young people in La Laguna, this subsidy can represent considerable relief: the average cost of a driving licence is around 1,500 euros, including tuition, classes, and fees. With this aid, the final outlay is reduced by a third, making access to training that is almost essential in sectors such as transport, logistics, or hospitality easier.
The measure is part of municipal policies supporting youth, which already include discounts on transport or training activities. The City Council reminds that all necessary documentation will be available on the municipal electronic headquarters when the application period opens.
