The Los Realejos council has unanimously approved the initiation of the honours process to award the Gold Medal of the Villa to the Los Realejos Philharmonic Music Society and the Cruz Santa Musical Group.
The Los Realejos City Council has taken the first step to grant the highest honorary distinction of the municipality to its two historic music formations. The ordinary council meeting held on Thursday, July 30, unanimously approved the initiation of the honours and distinctions process to award the Gold Medal of the Villa to the Los Realejos Philharmonic Music Society and the Cruz Santa Musical Group.
The proposal, presented by the Councillor for Culture, Alba Hernández, who will act as the instructor of the procedure, was supported by all political groups. A public exhibition period is now opened, followed by a timeframe for citizens and entities to join the initiative before the final approval.
The mayor, Adolfo González, highlighted that “due to their trajectory, cultural and human influence on so many generations of residents, the work of both bands truly deserves an honorary distinction of this category.” González emphasized that both groups not only promote culture but also carry out significant educational work through their music academies.
The Los Realejos Philharmonic Music Society, founded in 1902, and the Cruz Santa Musical Group, established in 1985, together boast over a century of shared history. Both are an essential part of the social and festive life of the municipality, participating in processions, concerts, and their own cultural projects. “We can no longer imagine the social life of Los Realejos without the presence of its two bands,” the mayor stated.
For her part, Alba Hernández noted that “music is one of the fundamental pillars of the cultural identity of Los Realejos.” The councillor emphasized that “few municipalities can boast of having, simultaneously, two music bands with such a long history, popular roots, and a permanent commitment to the social, cultural, and educational life of their community.”
The councillor also highlighted the intangible heritage character of these formations: “Their mere existence and the work they have been doing represent an intangible heritage of extraordinary value, the result of the efforts of generations of musicians, directors, teachers, families, and neighbours.”
The process will now continue its administrative procedure. Once the public exhibition and adhesion processes are completed, the council must definitively approve the granting of the Gold Medal. The award ceremony is expected to take place in the coming months, at an event that will bring together both groups.
The residents of Los Realejos will be able to consult the process at the City Council's notice board and submit their adhesions within the established timeframe. The distinction will represent an official recognition of these bands' contributions to the culture and social cohesion of the municipality.
