The Gáldar Plenary unanimously approved a motion to request the Canary Islands Government for a comprehensive plan to address the saturation of emergency rooms in the public hospitals of the island.
The Gáldar City Council has taken a firm step to tackle the crisis facing emergency services in the public hospitals of Gran Canaria. In its July session, the municipal groups unanimously approved an institutional motion calling on the Canary Islands Government to adopt urgent measures to alleviate the pressure on emergency services.
The initiative, presented by PSOE councillor Francisco Hernández, urges the Ministry of Health and Social Policy to develop a comprehensive social and health care plan. This plan should include specific actions such as improving hospital emergency services, strengthening staffing, increasing hospitalisation capacity, and expediting admissions to reduce waiting times.
The text also requests the planning of new investments in infrastructure and human resources, tailored to the current and future needs of the population. Additionally, it calls for strengthening Primary Care, home care, and continuous care services as a way to relieve pressure on emergency services.
Another key point of the motion is the request for periodic publication of indicators that allow for monitoring the evolution of the situation. This aims to ensure transparency and facilitate the tracking of improvements.
The Plenary also urges the adoption of legal measures in cases of patients with medical discharge who continue to occupy hospital beds due to a lack of social health resources. This situation, repeatedly reported by professionals, exacerbates the saturation of the system.
The municipal agreement includes an explicit recognition of the daily efforts made by healthcare and non-healthcare professionals in a context of high pressure. The Gáldar Corporation aims to highlight their work and advocate for better conditions for them and for patients.
The motion comes at a critical time for healthcare in Gran Canaria, where hospital emergency services have been facing increasing demand for months. The residents of Gáldar, like those of the rest of the island, are directly suffering the consequences of long waits and a lack of beds.
In the same plenary session, a motion from the mixed group Unidos por Gran Canaria was also approved for the adoption of urgent measures against the proliferation of snakes, specifically the California king snake. Furthermore, initial approval was given to a minor modification of the General Urban Planning Plan of Gáldar in the area of the Rural Settlement of Los Lomos.
With this initiative, Gáldar joins other voices calling for a structural solution for healthcare on the island. The City Council hopes that the Canary Islands Government will respond to the request and implement the necessary measures to ensure dignified and efficient healthcare.
