The current councillor of the Development Society, Carmen Pérez, replaces Carlos Tarife as the PP's candidate for the Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Her candidacy will be presented on Friday in García Sanabria park with Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

The Popular Party of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has chosen Carmen Pérez as its candidate for the Mayor of the capital in the upcoming municipal elections. Pérez, the current councillor of the Development Society of the City Council, takes over from Carlos Tarife, who had been leading the party's aspirations for the mayoral position.

The appointment will be officially announced next Friday at an event in García Sanabria park, which will be attended by the national leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. This has been confirmed by Pérez herself, who has expressed being “very excited” about the trust placed in her.

A candidate with technical and political profile

Carmen Pérez comes from the private sector and made the leap to public management a few years ago. From her position in the Development Society, she has worked on economic promotion and employment in the capital of Tenerife. She now aspires to become the second woman in the history of the Santa Cruz City Council to reach the Mayor’s office, following the socialist Patricia Hernández.

“For me, it is an immense honour and a huge responsibility that the party has considered me as a candidate for the Mayor. I made the leap from the private sector to public management to work for Santa Cruz, so the fact that the PP thinks of me is a great pride,” Pérez told the media.

The candidate has preferred not to reveal details about her future team or the challenges she sets for the city “until my appointment is official.” This secrecy leaves the main lines of her electoral programme up in the air, although it is expected that in the coming days she will outline her priorities.

Movements in the City Council and Parliament

The change in the candidacy is not the only shift within the local PP. Carlos Tarife, who was until now the candidate for Mayor, will head the PP list for the Parliament of the Canary Islands, where he is expected to hold the spokesperson position for the popular group. A move that strengthens the party's presence in the regional Chamber.

Once Pérez's candidacy is officially ratified, new movements will occur in the City Council. The future candidate will become the first deputy mayor, replacing Tarife, who will retain the area of Public Services until the end of the term. This restructuring will allow Pérez to gain institutional weight ahead of the electoral campaign.

For the residents of Santa Cruz, this change at the top of the local PP represents a new scenario for the upcoming elections. The capital of Tenerife, currently governed by the socialist José Manuel Bermúdez, faces municipal elections in which the PP seeks to regain the mayoral position after years in opposition. The choice of Carmen Pérez, a more technical than political profile, aims to connect with an electorate that demands management and closeness.

The event on Friday in García Sanabria park will mark the start of a campaign that is expected to be intense. Feijóo's presence underscores the importance that the national PP places on the Santa Cruz de Tenerife seat, one of the provincial capitals where the party believes it has real chances of victory.

Carmen Pérez, with her experience in the Development Society, will need to demonstrate that her time in public management has provided her with the necessary background to lead a complex City Council like that of the capital of Tenerife. So far, her appointment has been well received within the popular ranks, who trust that her renewing profile can attract undecided voters.
