The Santa Cruz City Council, through the SC Vital project, organised a beach Olympics day on Monday at Las Teresitas beach with nearly a hundred seniors and their grandchildren to commemorate Grandparents' Day.
Las Teresitas beach turned into an improvised Olympic stadium on Monday to celebrate Grandparents' Day. Nearly a hundred seniors, accompanied by their grandchildren, participated in a morning of games and water activities organised by the SC Vital project of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council.
The initiative, promoted by the Social Policies department, aims to recognise the fundamental role of seniors in society and to encourage active ageing through leisure, physical exercise, and intergenerational coexistence.
The participants came from the districts of Suroeste, Anaga, Ofra-Costa Sur, and Salud-La Salle, allowing for a meeting between neighbours from different areas of the municipality. The day kicked off with beach Olympics organised by stations, which included games such as parachute, bola canaria, tangram, bowling, relays, and a giant connect four.
The activity also featured an aquagym session with music, encouraging attendees to move to the rhythm of the songs while enjoying the water. The festive atmosphere was completed with free time to stroll along the shore and share impressions among families.
The Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, highlighted during his visit that “grandmothers and grandfathers represent the memory, experience, and values that have contributed to building the city we enjoy today.” Bermúdez emphasised that the day aims to thank them for their contributions and provide them with a space to share and have fun, demonstrating that active ageing is synonymous with quality of life.
The municipal leader also valued the presence of the grandchildren, stating that “we are especially pleased that grandchildren have chosen to accompany them in this celebration, because it is precisely those shared moments that strengthen family ties and ensure that the legacy of values passes from generation to generation.”
The Councillor for Social Policies, Charín González, explained that “SC Vital continues to establish itself as a project that improves the physical, emotional, and social well-being of our seniors.” González highlighted that activities like this reinforce the bonds between participants, promote healthy lifestyle habits, and help combat unwanted loneliness through leisure, participation, and meeting.
The delegated councillor for the Anaga District, Gladis de León, praised the choice of Las Teresitas as the venue. “Anaga once again becomes a meeting point to enjoy a day that combines nature, sport, and coexistence,” she stated. De León emphasised that it is satisfying to welcome participants from different districts in such an emblematic setting, which invites sharing experiences and continuing to build community.
The celebration is part of the actions promoted by SC Vital to encourage active ageing and the overall well-being of seniors in the municipality. Among its objectives are to promote social integration, recognise the role of seniors, encourage adapted physical activity, and create spaces for coexistence that favour an active and healthy life.
For many attendees, the day was an opportunity to break from routine and share quality time with their families. The grandchildren, for their part, enjoyed competing and playing alongside their grandparents, in an experience that combined sport, laughter, and mutual learning.
The Santa Cruz City Council plans to continue with this type of activity throughout the year, as part of the SC Vital programme, which offers workshops, excursions, and regular meetings for the city's seniors. The next event will be in September, with an adapted hiking route through the Anaga massif.
