Asamblea Majorera (AM) has reported a 78% increase in the cost of freight transport between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura following the removal of the Cádiz-Puerto del Rosario maritime line.
The nationalist party Asamblea Majorera (AM) has highlighted the serious situation regarding maritime connectivity for Fuerteventura. The party claims that the disappearance of the direct line between Cádiz and Puerto del Rosario, whose public service obligation contract ended on 30 June 2026, has caused an exorbitant rise in prices on alternative routes.
78% more expensive to transport goods to Fuerteventura
According to data provided by AM, the cost of freight transport on the route between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Puerto del Rosario has increased by 78%. The price for a cargo vehicle has risen from 46.28 euros to 82.40 euros. In contrast, the same journey to Arrecife (Lanzarote) remains around 98 euros.
The nationalists believe that this increase is a direct consequence of the removal of the connection with the Peninsula. Now, the only alternative for importing goods from Cádiz involves stopping in Lanzarote or Gran Canaria, which raises transport costs and extends delivery times.
Double insularity and lack of response from the State
AM has denounced the lack of response from the central Government regarding this situation. Both the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, and the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, have requested urgent measures to restore a direct line with the Peninsula.
“All of this represents a new blow to Fuerteventura's connectivity, both with the rest of the archipelago and with the Peninsula, exacerbating the double and even triple insularity suffered by the island and its inhabitants,” the party states.
The public service obligation contract that maintained the Cádiz-Puerto del Rosario line, awarded to the shipping company Armas Trasmediterránea, expired on 30 June without being renewed or a new connection tendered. This has left the island without a direct maritime link to Andalusia.
Impact on the daily lives of the residents
For the residents of Fuerteventura, this situation translates into an increase in the prices of products arriving by ship. Most goods, from food to construction materials, depend on maritime transport. With the 78% increase on the route from Gran Canaria, the final cost falls on the consumer.
Moreover, the lack of a direct line with the Peninsula forces companies to plan further in advance and incur higher logistical costs. AM warns that this situation harms the competitiveness of the majorera economy and hinders the island's development.
The party has urged the Government of Spain to reactivate the tender for the Cádiz-Puerto del Rosario line and to ensure affordable prices. In the meantime, the majoreros will continue to pay more for the same, trapped in an insularity that does not cease.
