The Firgas City Council has achieved a perfect score in the Canary Islands Transparency Index (ITCanarias) for 2025, with a 10 out of 10. The northern municipality of Gran Canaria has improved from 7.95 in 2024 to the maximum score in just one year.
The Firgas City Council has obtained the highest score in the Canary Islands Transparency Index (ITCanarias) corresponding to the 2025 evaluation, achieving a 10 out of 10. This result places the Gran Canaria municipality among the most transparent in the archipelago and represents a qualitative leap compared to the previous year, when it reached 7.95, the first time it surpassed the pass mark.
The evaluation report breaks down the score into several indicators. In the Mandatory Information Compliance Indicator (ICIO), it scored 6.69 out of 7; in the Web Support Compliance Indicator (ICS), it achieved 2.98 out of 3; in the Active Advertising Compliance Indicator (ICPA), it totaled 9.67 out of 10; and in the Voluntary Transparency Indicator (ITV), it reached 0.70 out of 1. The sum of these components has allowed it to achieve a global score of 10.00.
The mayor of Firgas, Alexis Henríquez, valued the result as
“the consequence of constant and responsible work that often goes unseen, but is essential for the administration to function better. Since we took on the responsibility of governing the City Council, we have always maintained that it was crucial to organise our internal affairs, and we are achieving that.”
Henríquez highlighted the effort dedicated to
“that silent work, which is not always visible to the public.”He recalled that in 2024, Firgas passed the evaluation for the first time with a score of 7.95, and just one year later, it has achieved the maximum score. “It is a source of satisfaction because it shows that well-done work eventually pays off,” he added.
The municipal leader also wanted to acknowledge the work of the City Council staff:
“This achievement is the merit of the workers of the City Council, who with their professionalism, dedication, and daily effort have contributed to improving internal procedures and making a more transparent, efficient, and citizen-friendly administration possible.”
This advancement in transparency represents a direct benefit for the residents of Firgas, who can now more easily access municipal public information, understand the allocation of funds, and follow the management of the local government. The council's website has improved its standards of accessibility and clarity, facilitating the consultation of budgets, contracts, and meeting minutes.
The mayor concluded that this recognition is not a final goal, but a motivation to continue improving and working for Firgas. The City Council has committed to maintaining and even exceeding these levels of transparency in future evaluations.
The ITCanarias is an index developed by the University of La Laguna that evaluates the compliance of transparency obligations of Canary Island councils. Firgas is thus positioned among the leading municipalities in the Islands, serving as an example of good administrative practice on the island of Gran Canaria.
