The Canarian Cuban Solidarity Network is calling for a march on Friday, July 24 at 19:00 from San Telmo Park to the Plaza de la Feria to denounce the U.S. blockade.

On Friday, July 24, at 19:00, the streets of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will once again be the scene of a mobilization in defence of the Cuban people. The demonstration, which will start from San Telmo Park and conclude at Plaza de la Feria, aims to denounce the economic, commercial, and financial blockade that the United States has maintained against Cuba for over six decades.

A Blockade That Is Intensifying

According to the organisers, in recent months the U.S. administration has intensified sanctions, promoting an energy blockade that prevents fuel from reaching the island. This situation exacerbates the electricity crisis and directly impacts the living conditions of millions of Cubans.

“The mobilization also aims to defend the right of peoples to freely decide their future, without interference or blockades,” state the Canarian Cuban Solidarity Network.

The call is promoted by the Canarian Cuban Solidarity Network along with social, trade union, and political organisations. The organisers believe it is a moral obligation to respond to the solidarity that Cuba has provided to the world for decades.

A Debt of Solidarity

Since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, Cuba has contributed to the liberation of African peoples and has sent doctors, nurses, and teachers to countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuban medical brigades even went to Italy to help save lives.

For this reason, the organisers believe it is time to return some of that solidarity to the Cuban people. The demonstration aims to be an act of denunciation and internationalist commitment against a policy that seeks to subdue a country defending its independence through hunger.

Route and Participation

The march will begin at 19:00 at San Telmo Park and will end at Plaza de la Feria. Hundreds of people are expected to participate, according to the organisations. Attendees will carry banners and chant slogans in support of Cuba and against the blockade.

For the residents of Las Palmas, this mobilization represents an opportunity to show their support for an international cause from their own city. The event is on Friday, July 24 at 19:00 at San Telmo Park.
