The Plaza de la Música-Jerónimo Saavedra in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria became the epicentre of football fervour this Sunday, with nearly 8,000 people gathered to follow the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on a giant screen. The match, held in the United States, crowned Spain as world champion for the second time in its history.

Families, young people, the elderly, and groups of friends shared the excitement of the match. The Spanish National Team triumphed over Argentina, and among the heroes of the victory are two Canarians: Yeremy Pino and Pedro González, both from the islands, who became world champions. For the fans in the capital, seeing their compatriots lift the trophy was an extra source of pride.
The broadcast was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Municipal Institute for the Promotion of Physical Activity and Sport (IMD), the Tourism Department of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the Insular Sports Institute, and the Inter-Island Football Federation of Las Palmas. According to the institutions, the aim was to provide a meeting space to collectively experience a historic event.
Special security and cleaning measures
The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council deployed a comprehensive device to ensure safety and mobility around the Plaza de la Música and Plaza de España. A first protective fence was installed around the sculpture in Plaza de España on Friday, and a second fence was completed around the venue on Sunday.
Throughout the day, a coordinated operation between the Local Police and the National Police ensured the smooth running of the event. Additionally, the Cleaning Department mobilised 41 workers and 22 vehicles from 4:00 PM on Sunday until 4:00 AM on Monday, carrying out preventive and post-cleaning tasks. 30 additional bins were installed in the vicinity to facilitate waste management.
The city's mayor, Carolina Darias, accompanied by the sports councillor, Carla Campoamor, and other councillors, also joined the celebration in the square. Darias highlighted the festive atmosphere and the civility of the attendees, who enjoyed a historic afternoon without any notable incidents.
For the residents of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the giant screen in the Plaza de la Música has established itself as a meeting point for major sporting events. Those who could not travel to the United States had the chance to experience the match as if they were there, surrounded by neighbours and the roar of the local fans. The next event, if the schedule allows, could repeat the formula.
