The mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García, has been appointed first vice-president of the Southeast Commonwealth, while Óscar Hernández (Agüimes) takes on the presidency for the next 12 months.
The mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García, has been designated first vice-president of the Southeast Commonwealth of Gran Canaria, in the presidential handover held this Thursday in the Plenary Hall of the Agüimes Town Hall. The new president is Óscar Hernández, mayor of Agüimes, who replaces Vanesa Martín, mayor of Ingenio, who becomes second vice-president.
An institutional cooperation model
During the event, Hernández highlighted that the Southeast Commonwealth is “one of the best examples of collaboration between administrations in the Canary Islands.” He thanked the work of his predecessors and emphasized his commitment to strengthening the alliance between Agüimes, Ingenio and Santa Lucía de Tirajana to promote strategic initiatives. “All our decisions must be aimed at improving the quality of life of the citizens,” he stated.
The new president pointed out that the entity faces challenges such as sustainable water management, energy transition, circular economy, and adaptation to climate change. In this regard, Francisco García and Vanesa Martín agreed on defending the model of cooperation and sustainable development of the region.
Priorities for the coming year
The Southeast Commonwealth, made up of the three municipalities, reaffirms its commitment to projects in water, energy, waste, and circular economy. Hernández announced that the roadmap will focus on unity and shared planning to turn the area into a benchmark for sustainability. For the residents of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, this handover means maintaining an active voice in regional decision-making, with García as first vice-president looking after the municipality's interests.
Hernández's term will last 12 months, after which a new rotating handover is expected among the mayors of the region. This annual presidency system aims to ensure balanced representation of the three town councils.
