The Santa Lucía de Tirajana Town Hall has opened the entry period for the III Starlight Photography Competition, aimed at raising awareness about the protection of the night sky. The contest includes a photography course and an observation of the eclipse on August 12 at the Salinas de Tenefé.

The Gran Canaria municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana has launched the third edition of its Starlight Photography Competition, an initiative that seeks to raise awareness among the population about the importance of preserving the quality of the night sky. The contest, organised by the Town Hall, is open to all astrophotography enthusiasts and is part of the local sustainable tourism strategy.

A competition with training and astronomical observation

The mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García, has highlighted that “as part of our commitment to sustainable tourism that values nature, we want to continue working to remain a Starlight municipality.” To this end, the competition is complemented by a Nature Photography Course that will take place on August 13 and 14.

The Tourism Councillor, Julio Ojeda, has stated that “we believe in intelligent tourism, which balances economic development with respect for our environment.” He also announced that on August 12, an eclipse observation will be held at the Salinas de Tenefé, an event open to the public, with registration details to be published soon on the municipal website.

Santa Lucía, the only Starlight municipality in Gran Canaria

The director of the competition and astrophotographer Alejandro Rodríguez has acknowledged “the Town Hall's efforts to keep light pollution at bay.” Rodríguez reminded that Santa Lucía is the only municipality in Gran Canaria with Starlight designation, and warned that this year a new comprehensive report must be conducted to extend that recognition.

Those interested in participating in the competition have until September 15 to take and send their photographs to the email address santaluciastarlight@gmail.com. The complete rules of the contest are available on the Santa Lucía de Tirajana Town Hall website.

The initiative, which combines art, science, and environmental awareness, aims to involve locals and visitors in protecting the starry sky, a natural resource increasingly threatened by light pollution. For residents, it represents an opportunity to learn night photography techniques and enjoy astronomical events such as the August eclipse.

The Town Hall encourages all photography enthusiasts to participate and contribute their images to highlight the sky of Santa Lucía. The awards ceremony will take place at a gala yet to be determined, where the best snapshots will be displayed.
