The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has begun reconstruction works on the southern section of El Chip street, in Ajimar Business Park, Telde, with an investment of 662,000 euros to correct the subsidence of the road and pavement.
The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has started the reconstruction of the southern section of El Chip street, in Ajimar Business Park, Telde, with an investment of 661,971.15 euros. This action responds to the structural deterioration that has caused the subsidence of the road and part of the pavement, aiming to ensure safety and improve mobility in one of the main industrial areas of the municipality.
The Councillor for Economic Development of the Cabildo, Minerva Alonso, visited the start of the works on Tuesday alongside the president of the Ajimar conservation entity, Juan Sarmiento. Alonso explained that the intervention is not limited to renewing the pavement, but addresses the root cause of the damage by reconstructing the road's structure. "We are not just repairing a road, but resolving a structural problem to provide greater safety for businesses and all the people who use this infrastructure daily," she stated.
The project includes the complete reconstruction of the street, as the deterioration of the fills and the pavement has caused the road to settle. To prevent the problem from recurring, the project will address the road's structure and improve the drainage system.
The works include the demolition of the existing pavement, the remediation of the affected ground, and the reconstruction of the road. Additionally, it will be necessary to previously divert the sewage and drainage networks to replace the deteriorated fills and prevent future infiltrations.
The project also plans to construct a concrete retaining wall to stabilize the adjacent slope and protect the medium voltage pipelines and existing fuel transport conduits in the area. At the same time, the capacity of the stormwater drainage system will be increased by installing new larger drains.
Once the structural works are completed, the road and pavements will be reconstructed, providing the road with a surface prepared to withstand the heavy traffic characteristic of the business park. The work will be carried out in two phases to ensure access to the companies located in this area at all times.
As Minerva Alonso recalled, this action is part of the island's strategy for modernising the industrial areas of Gran Canaria. Between 2017 and 2026, the Cabildo has allocated more than 10 million euros to improve the industrial areas of Telde. In the specific case of Ajimar, the accumulated investment exceeds one million euros following previous actions to rehabilitate pavements and renew signage, to which this road reconstruction work is now added.
The councillor argued that this type of investment helps strengthen the competitiveness of the island's business fabric. "Investing in industrial land is investing in employment, competitiveness, and economic development," she affirmed, while noting that the goal is for companies to develop their activities in infrastructures that are "modern, safe, and adapted to their needs."
The works on El Chip street will last several months, although the Cabildo has not specified the exact completion date. During the development of the works, access to the park's companies will be maintained, with partial closures and signposted diversions.
