The Town Hall of Telde will bring to the Plenary this Friday the approval of the Pasaje Miguel Jiménez Pérez Nino Jiménez, a space next to the Municipal Theatre that will recognise the career of the Canarian folklorist.
The Town Hall of Telde will submit for a vote in the municipal Plenary this Friday the creation of the Pasaje Miguel Jiménez Pérez Nino Jiménez, a public space located around the Juan Ramón Jiménez Municipal Theatre. The initiative aims to pay tribute to a key figure in Canarian folklore and traditional music.
The file, promoted by the Department of Culture led by Juan Martel, began its processing in 2021 following requests from various citizen and cultural groups in the municipality. Nino Jiménez, recipient of the Cultural Merit Award from the City of Telde, is recognised for his contribution to the dissemination of Canarian musical traditions.
The passage will run through the rear and side areas of the theatre, connecting the Daora fountain with the staircase leading to the Telde Municipal Market and continuing upwards to Avenida Poeta Pablo Neruda. It is a route that is already part of the urban landscape of the city and will now bear the name of this folklorist.
The proposal is part of the process of purging and reviewing pending files for the naming of public spaces that the mayor, Juan Antonio Peña, ordered to be promoted at the beginning of his term. The aim is to resolve procedures initiated years ago and to advance in the recognition of individuals and groups linked to the history, culture, and memory of Telde.
The file has favourable reports from the Statistics Office, the Urban Planning Department, the Cultural Service Management, and the Official Chronicler of the City of Telde, Antonio María González Padrón. In his report, González Padrón highlights that Nino Jiménez represents “a traditional form of cultural transmission based on neighbourly coexistence, community participation, and the continuity of popular musical customs,” and emphasises his contribution to the maintenance of Canarian intangible heritage.
The Councillor for Culture, Juan Martel, has stated that “this recognition settles a debt with a figure very dear to Telde and to the world of Canarian folklore. Nino Jiménez represents that close culture, the one that comes from the neighbourhoods, from the groups, and from the people who keep our traditions alive generation after generation.” Martel added that his department is working to recover and complete files that have been pending for years, responding to citizen proposals.
For his part, Mayor Juan Antonio Peña has stated that “the naming of this passage is a deserved recognition of a person who dedicated his life to Canarian culture and left an indelible mark on many generations of Teldenses.” Peña recalled that upon taking office, they found numerous pending naming files and instructed to promote their processing with administrative rigor.
The mayor added that “this is just one of the files we are unlocking. There are other pending procedures that will continue to advance so that the city can recognise individuals, groups, and figures that deserve to be part of the street names and public spaces of Telde.”
With the plenary approval, Telde will incorporate a new space dedicated to the memory of Nino Jiménez, linking his name to the cultural environment of the Juan Ramón Jiménez Municipal Theatre. The measure reinforces the presence of Canarian tradition in the urban heritage of the city, in a gesture that residents and cultural groups have received with satisfaction.
The passage joins other municipal recognitions of figures from folklore and popular culture, in a line of work that the Town Hall of Telde maintains to highlight those who have contributed to local identity. The chosen location, next to the theatre and near the market, aims to integrate the tribute into a space of daily transit for the people of Telde.
The plenary session this Friday will decide whether the file receives final approval. If so, the Pasaje Miguel Jiménez Pérez Nino Jiménez will become part of the official street map of the city, in an act expected to be formalised in the coming weeks with appropriate signage.
