The Granadilla de Abona Town Council, through the Social Services department, has launched a free summer camp for people with disabilities. The initiative takes place at CEIP Montaña Pelada, in El Médano, during the months of July and August.
A total of 45 people with disabilities, aged between 3 and 25 years, are participating this summer in the free inclusive camp organised by the Granadilla de Abona Town Council. The initiative, driven by the Social Services department, is held at the facilities of CEIP Montaña Pelada, in El Médano, during the months of July and August.
The councillor responsible for the area, Rubén García Casañas, recently visited the educational centre to see first-hand the development of the activities. He explained that the camp aims to provide a quality leisure alternative for people with disabilities in the municipality, while facilitating the work-life balance of their parents.
“We continue to bet on the continuity of essential services that meet the demands of a sector of the population,” said García Casañas. The councillor highlighted that the programme has a team of professionals with experience in the field, who provide personalised and quality care during the summer period.
The camp includes a wide range of activities, including horse therapy, surfing initiation, dance and fitness, a children's yoga workshop, beach games, cognitive games, cinema, and a day called ‘Day on Wheels’. This edition has expanded both the number of activities and the number of professionals, and the schedule extends from 07:30 to 14:30, with an additional hour of activities each day.
García Casañas emphasised that the initiative represents an improvement in the quality of life for people with disabilities in the municipality, promoting their personal development and social integration. He also highlighted the positive impact on families, who can balance their work and personal lives during the summer months.
The camp takes place in an accessible environment adapted to the needs of the participants, ensuring the safety and well-being of all. The monitors and professionals have specific training in the field of disability, allowing for individualised attention.
This initiative is part of the Granadilla de Abona Town Council's commitment to promoting inclusion and equal opportunities. The Social Services department works year-round on programmes aimed at this group, although the summer camp represents an important reinforcement during the school holidays.
