The Presidency Department publishes in the BOC the first specific public employment announcement for people with intellectual disabilities. The 20 subordinate positions can be applied for from 1 to 28 September.
The General Directorate of Public Function of the Canary Islands Government published this Tuesday in the Official Bulletin of the Canary Islands (BOC) the first public employment announcement in its history aimed exclusively at people with intellectual disabilities. A total of 20 subordinate positions are offered, assigned to Group E, and reserved for those with a recognised degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%.
The announcement, promoted by the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security Department, accumulates positions from the public employment offers for the years 2023, 2024, and 2025. Councillor Nieves Lady Barreto emphasised that with this measure, the Canary Executive is taking "a decisive step towards building a more inclusive, accessible administration committed to real equality of opportunity."
The application submission period will remain open from 1 to 28 September 2026, within the twenty working days set by the bases. Interested individuals must meet the general requirements for access to public employment, hold a certificate of schooling or equivalent qualification, and prove intellectual disability at the required level (mild, moderate, or severe).
An adapted and accessible process
The procedure will consist of a single phase of opposition with an exercise divided into two parts, both mandatory and eliminatory. The first will be a multiple-choice questionnaire prepared in easy reading, while the second will consist of a practical case regarding the functions of subordinate staff, such as monitoring and safeguarding buildings, notifications, transferring files, or reprographic tasks.
To facilitate preparation, the General Directorate of Public Function has published a Study Support Guide and a document with supporting questions on its website. Additionally, those needing assistance to submit the electronic application will have access to a support service managed in collaboration with Plena Inclusión Canarias, which can be contacted via email at empleopublico@plenainclusioncanarias.org and by phone at 602701001.
This initiative represents progress in the labour inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in the Canary public sector, a group that has historically faced challenges in accessing such positions. With this announcement, the Canary Islands Government aims for the Administration "to represent the talent and ability of all people in our society," according to the councillor.
The announcement is part of inclusive public employment policies that have been promoted in recent years by various autonomous communities, now reaching the Canary Islands with a specific process tailored to the needs of this group.

The assistance from Plena Inclusión Canarias will be operational throughout the application period to resolve queries and assist with the online procedure.
This selective process adds to other measures adopted by the General Directorate of Public Function to promote accessibility and equality of opportunity in access to public employment, such as adapting tests or reserving positions for other groups with disabilities.
Councillor Nieves Lady Barreto has insisted that this announcement is "a decisive step" and has encouraged individuals with intellectual disabilities who meet the requirements to participate. "We want the Canary Administration to reflect the society it serves," she added.
With this measure, the Canary Islands positions itself at the forefront of labour inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities in the public sector, a historic demand from groups like Plena Inclusión, which has actively collaborated in designing the process.
The announcement also includes support measures for carrying out the exercises, such as time adjustments and assistance during the tests, thus ensuring equal opportunities for all candidates.
