The Canary Islands Government has authorised an expenditure of over 12.3 million euros for the home dialysis service at the Insular-Materno Infantil University Hospital Complex, valid until 2030.
The Canary Islands Government Council has greenlit an investment of 12,381,995.13 euros to contract the home dialysis service at the Insular-Materno Infantil University Hospital Complex (CHUIMI). The agreement, adopted on July 27, will allow for peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis treatments at home for patients with chronic kidney disease registered at this reference hospital in the capital of Gran Canaria.
The new contract, which will be processed through an open and ordinary procedure, will last for 48 months, from 2026 to 2030. The service includes the modalities of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, automated peritoneal dialysis or with a cycler, and home haemodialysis with telemonitoring. The latter allows for remote monitoring of patients, facilitating continuous follow-up without the need for trips to the hospital.
The initiative is aimed at patients of the Nephrology Service at CHUIMI who require renal replacement therapy, as well as those displaced from other autonomous communities or countries who, under existing agreements, need to be treated at this complex. It is estimated that the service will benefit a significant number of patients with advanced chronic kidney failure on the island of Gran Canaria.
Home dialysis techniques have shown excellent results in terms of quality of life and patient survival, according to various studies. Additionally, they offer a favourable cost-effectiveness ratio compared to hospital haemodialysis, while reducing travel and improving patient autonomy. Documented benefits include better control of uremic toxins, nutritional parameters, bone-mineral alterations, and blood pressure.

At the same time, the Executive has authorised the second extension of the haemodialysis contract in care units linked to the CHUIMI Management, for an amount of 6,125,192.35 euros. This extension, which covers the period from December 1, 2026, to November 30, 2027, is granted to the company AVERICUM SL, the awarded service provider. The continuity of this treatment is essential for patients with chronic kidney disease who require periodic and uninterrupted dialysis to preserve their health and life.
With these two investments, the Health Department reinforces its commitment to home renal care, a growing trend in advanced health systems. The telemonitoring incorporated in home haemodialysis will allow nephrologists at CHUIMI to adjust treatments in real-time from the hospital, representing a qualitative leap in patient safety.
CHUIMI, which serves a large population in Gran Canaria, is one of the reference centres in the autonomous community for the treatment of chronic kidney disease. The investment approved today adds to other measures taken by the Canary Health Service to improve nephrological care in the islands.
