The Cabildo of Lanzarote presents the documentary 'Share, Transform, Decide. A History of Participation in Lanzarote' on July 30 at the Atlántida Cinema in Arrecife. The production covers over 50 years of social mobilization.
The Open Government Area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa will premiere the documentary 'Share, Transform, Decide. A History of Participation in Lanzarote' next Thursday, July 30, at 19:00. The screening will take place at the Atlántida Cinema in Arrecife, and entry will be free until full capacity is reached.
The 33-minute production explores over half a century of citizen mobilization on the island. According to the Cabildo, the documentary acknowledges the role of associations, collectives, and social movements in the transformation of Lanzarote, from the first neighbourhood associations to the more recent ecological and social struggles.
The Councillor for Citizen Participation and Open Government, Armando Santana, highlighted that “Lanzarote has a huge and vibrant associative fabric, which has been key in driving social improvements, defending the territory, and strengthening coexistence.” Santana added that “solid institutions are not built solely from offices: they also need an informed, organized citizenry capable of participating in common affairs.”
The documentary, directed by Pilar Estevan and produced by David Hernández, is the result of an extensive process of research, production, and filming. The project is complemented by 16 exclusive pieces for social media, designed to broaden its reach and bring the content to new audiences.
The production includes testimonies from historians, journalists, activists, public officials, and representatives of the associative movement. Through them, the film reconstructs a little-known part of the recent history of the island, covering everything from the first neighbourhood associations and workers' struggles to the environmental movement, social associativism, and new forms of participation promoted by public administrations.
The project has received collaboration from the seven municipalities of the island, whose representatives participated in its preparation and in a joint debate that has been incorporated into the documentary. The production also raises a reflection on how forms of organization have changed, which values remain relevant, and what challenges citizen participation faces in an increasingly individualised society.
According to the Cabildo, the documentary arises from the need to recover and preserve an essential part of Lanzarote's democratic memory, to acknowledge the contribution of those who have transformed the island through collective action, and to transmit that legacy to new generations. The project particularly aligns with SDG 16, which promotes inclusive societies, strong institutions, and participatory decision-making, and with SDG 11, aimed at building sustainable and resilient communities.
The premiere will take place on Thursday, July 30, at 19:00 at the Atlántida Cinema in Arrecife. Entry is free until full capacity is reached, with no prior ticket or invitation required. The event is organized by the Open Government Area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
