The Cabildo of Lanzarote has launched Dog Week, with activities running until July 31 to promote responsible adoption and ownership.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, through the Animal Welfare Department, has organised Dog Week, a programme of activities that will take place until July 31. The initiative aims to raise awareness among the public about animal protection, responsible adoption, and respectful coexistence with companion animals.
The Animal Welfare Councillor, Armando Santana, explained on Lancelot Radio the importance of these actions and highlighted the role that dogs play in society. The programme will travel through different municipalities on the island and will also reach La Graciosa with educational activities, workshops, and a canine education day.
Among the planned activities, information stands will be set up in Arrecife, Uga, Teguise, La Graciosa, Tías, and Tinajo. At these locations, animal protection associations will provide information on adoption and responsible ownership. Additionally, bracelets and stickers with messages against animal abandonment will be distributed.
The creative workshop 'My Recycled Best Friend', held on July 25 at the Uga Camel Interpretation Centre, combined creativity, recycling, and education in values. This activity, open to all ages, aimed to promote respect for animals through recycling.
Another notable initiative is the 'Exemplary Canine Citizen Lanzarote' day, an educational proposal that uses canine education to improve coexistence and animal welfare. Participants will be able to complete an evaluation circuit with their dogs based on coexistence skills, socialisation, and self-control, without a competitive nature.
Dogs that pass the tests will receive the 'Exemplary Canine Citizen Lanzarote' diploma and will be included in the Honourary Register of Exemplary Canine Citizens. This initiative aims to recognise good behaviour in pets and promote responsible ownership.
During the week, an audiovisual campaign will be disseminated on social media with three pieces focused on the fight against abandonment, responsible adoption, and the benefits of living with dogs, especially for elderly people and those with disabilities.
Armando Santana announced that he will present a motion related to social awareness and animal protection at the next Cabildo plenary session. The councillor expressed hope that all scheduled activities will engage the public in animal protection and advance towards more responsible coexistence.
