The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a warning for light haze in the skies of the Canary archipelago for this Monday, a phenomenon that will particularly affect the eastern islands. Maximum temperatures could reach 34 degrees in Gran Canaria, while very strong gusts of wind are expected in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Haze and wind: Saharan dust returns to the islands
The haze, although light, will be noticeable at altitude throughout the day. According to Aemet, the skies will be mostly clear or with few clouds across the archipelago, with cloudy intervals in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and in the low areas of the northern part of the other islands. The suspended dust will moderately reduce visibility, especially in the early hours of the day.
The wind will blow moderately from the northeast, with strong intervals in the low areas of the southeast and northwest of the mountainous islands. In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the trade winds will reach occasionally very strong gusts, particularly in the interior and southern half, where caution is advised. In the Jandía area of Fuerteventura, gusts could be especially intense during the second half of the day.
Rising temperatures: up to 34 degrees in Gran Canaria
Temperatures will hardly change, although it is expected that in the southern half of Fuerteventura they will exceed 30 degrees. In Gran Canaria, the mercury could reach 34 degrees in some areas, while in Lanzarote maximums of up to 30 degrees are expected in the southeast. In the rest of the archipelago, temperatures will remain stable, with values typical of the season.
For residents and tourists in the islands, the day will be hot with a muggy feeling due to the haze. Aemet recommends avoiding prolonged sun exposure during the central hours of the day and staying hydrated, especially in the areas most affected by heat and dust.
Sea conditions: rough seas and swell
Regarding sea conditions, Aemet forecasts winds from the north and northeast of force 4 to 6, which will increase to 5 to 7 during the day. There will be rough seas or very rough seas along most coasts, while on the southwest, west, and south coasts the wind will be variable from force 1 to 3, with breezes and choppy seas. A northeast swell with waves of 1 to 2 meters is expected, so caution is advised for sailors and bathers.
On the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the swell could be more intense, with waves exceeding two meters in some exposed areas. Authorities recommend following the instructions of emergency services and avoiding water activities in risky areas.
For the coming days, Aemet does not rule out that the haze may persist at altitude, although with less intensity. Temperatures will remain stable, with no significant changes, and the wind is expected to moderate from Tuesday. Canarians and visitors should stay alert for weather updates, especially in the eastern islands, where conditions will be more adverse.
