The body of a man was located last Friday in a ravine in the capital municipality, between the urbanisations Costanera and Acorán. The National Police are investigating the circumstances of the death.
The body of a man was discovered last Friday inside a cave in a coastal area of the metropolitan region of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The remains were in advanced state of decomposition, according to the National Police, who have taken over the investigation.
Officers from the Homicide Group of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade were dispatched to a location situated between the urbanisations Costanera (El Rosario) and Acorán (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), near the territorial boundary of both municipalities. The body was found in a hard-to-access ravine.
Initial hypotheses and DNA tests
The initial investigations suggest that it is a male, although to confirm this and determine his identity, it will be necessary to wait for the results of the DNA tests. One line of inquiry for investigators is that the body may belong to a man who has been reported missing for months.
According to forensic estimates, the death may have occurred approximately four months ago. The state of decomposition of the body has complicated visual identification, so the Scientific Police are working with biological samples to compare them with missing persons databases.
Another tragic incident at the Mamotreto de Añaza
On the same Friday, a man died after falling from the abandoned building known as Mamotreto de Añaza, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The investigation was also taken over by the Homicide Group of the National Police. Firefighters from the Tenerife Consortium from the Tomé Cano park were involved in the operation.
This suicide occurred hours after a negotiator from the National Police prevented another voluntary death in the same structure. The Mamotreto, an unfinished building on the capital's coastline, was already the scene of a tragedy last year when a 13-year-old girl died after falling from a height of five floors.
Despite the efforts of the Santa Cruz City Council to seal the access to the building after the teenager's death, some people continue to enter the building, which lacks any safety measures.
Investigation underway
The National Police are keeping both investigations open to clarify the circumstances of the deaths. In the case of the body found in the cave, the officers are trying to reconstruct the last movements of the man and determine if there were any third parties involved. For now, no hypothesis is ruled out, although everything points to a natural or accidental death.
Residents of the Costanera and Acorán areas have expressed their concern over the discovery, as the ravine is a place frequented by hikers and walkers. The Police recommend avoiding the area while investigations are ongoing.
