The General Directorate of Blood Donation of the SCS has activated a network of mobile units in various municipalities of the archipelago to facilitate donations during the summer, a time when reserves usually decrease.
The Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) has intensified its call to the public to donate blood during the summer months, a season when donations historically decline while hospital needs remain the same or even increase. To bring donation closer to the population, the agency has planned a wide network of mobile and fixed points across all the islands, in addition to the usual ones.
Blood and its components cannot be artificially manufactured, so voluntary and altruistic donation remains the only way to ensure their availability. Each donation can save or improve the lives of several people, as it is used in surgical interventions, cancer treatments, transplants, and emergencies. The SCS reminds that ideally, one should donate at least twice a year.
In Tenerife, next week mobile units will be set up in Adeje, La Orotava, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and La Laguna, among other locations. For example, on Monday and Tuesday, donations can be made at the Leroy Merlín Shopping Centre in Adeje, from 10:45 to 13:00 and from 17:45 to 20:00. On Wednesday and Thursday, the collection will move to the Tourist Development Centre in the same municipality, with variable hours.
In La Orotava, the fixed point at the El Trompo Shopping Centre will be operational from Monday to Friday, with hours from 10:15 to 13:30 and from 17:15 to 20:30 (Monday to Wednesday), and from 17:15 to 20:00 (Thursday and Friday). Additionally, on July 27 and 28, a mobile unit will be set up at the post office in La Cuesta, La Laguna, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:45 to 20:45.
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on July 30 and 31, donations can be made at Plaza de El Príncipe, from 9:45 to 14:15 and from 16:30 to 20:45. Also, on Friday 31, Plaza de la Catedral in La Laguna will host a unit from 10:00 to 13:45 and from 17:00 to 20:15.
For those who prefer fixed points, the one in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on Calle Méndez Núñez, operates from Monday to Friday from 9:15 to 20:15. At the San Isidro Health Centre in Granadilla de Abona, donations can be made from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 13:30 and from 14:15 to 19:30, with parking reserved for donors.
In the hospital network, the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC) allows donations without an appointment from Sunday to Friday from 8:30 to 21:30, and on Saturdays from 8:30 to 14:30 and from 15:30 to 20:00. The University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria operates from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 20:00 and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 13:00. Donations can also be made at Hospiten Bellevue (Puerto de la Cruz) by appointment, and at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in La Laguna from Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 12:30.
In Gran Canaria, on Monday donations can be made at Aldeas Infantiles in Telde from 9:30 to 13:30. On Tuesday, a mobile unit will visit the Domingo Alonso facilities at the terminal dock from 9:30 to 13:30. On Wednesday, the unit will be in Miller Bajo (9:30 to 14:00 and 15:30 to 20:00) and in Siete Palmas (9:30 to 13:30). On July 30 and 31, the Alisios Shopping Centre will host a unit from 9:30 to 14:00 and from 16:30 to 20:30.
Additionally, on July 27 and 28, the campaign continues in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, with a mobile unit on Avenida de Canarias, in Vecindario, from 10:15 to 14:00 and from 17:15 to 20:45. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the fixed point at the Alisios Shopping Centre will also be operational over the weekend.
The SCS emphasises that donation is a solidarity act that does not require an appointment at most points, and encourages the public to approach the established units. For more information, one can contact the hospitals' phone numbers or check the website of the Canary Islands Health Service.
