The Yaiza Town Council, in Lanzarote, has announced an investment of 2.2 million euros aimed at the renovation and improvement of the Playa Blanca football pitch. The project, which has already been approved, includes comprehensive actions on the sports facilities, with the aim of modernising a key space for local sport.
The works will include the replacement of the artificial grass, the repair of the changing rooms, and the improvement of access for people with reduced mobility. The irrigation system will also be renewed, and new LED lighting will be installed, which will allow for significant energy savings.
The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, has highlighted that this investment responds to a long-standing demand from local residents and sports clubs. “We want the Playa Blanca football pitch to be a benchmark on the island, not only for sports practice but also for community life,” he stated.
The project is part of the municipal infrastructure improvement plan that the council has been developing since 2024. In recent months, Yaiza has allocated more than 5 million euros to the renovation of public spaces, including parks and cultural centres.
The Playa Blanca football pitch is used by several local teams, including Unión Deportiva Playa Blanca, which competes in regional categories. The renovation will allow for higher-level matches to be hosted and improve the experience for fans.
The works, expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027, will have an estimated execution period of eight months. During that time, alternatives will be provided for clubs to continue training, such as the use of other municipal facilities.
The investment will be financed with the Town Council's own funds and a grant from the Cabildo of Lanzarote, according to municipal sources. The council is confident that the renovation will boost grassroots sports and attract more visitors to the tourist town.
The residents of Playa Blanca have expressed their satisfaction with the news, although some have voiced concerns about potential disruptions during the works. The Town Council has committed to minimising the impact and keeping the public informed.
