The association Los Serenquenquenes has presented the programme of their Cultural Week to Mayor Óscar Hernández, which will take place in July with karting, lectures and a zanga tournament.

The Cultural, Sports and Recreational Association (ACDR) Los Serenquenquenes, a historic murga from Agüimes, has unveiled the programme for its Cultural Week, which will take place during the month of July. The mayor of the municipality, Óscar Hernández, received representatives of the group on Wednesday to learn firsthand about the planned activities, which combine cultural, sports and recreational proposals open to the public.

Karting, talks and lectures in the programme

One of the highlights of the week will be the outing to Racing Kart in Maspalomas, scheduled for July 18. This recreational activity promises to be a draw for speed and fun enthusiasts. On July 20 and 21, the Plenary Hall of the Agüimes Town Hall will host two educational events: the talk ‘Climate Change. Agenda 2030’, given by Aridane González, a doctor in Marine Sciences from ULPGC; and the lecture ‘The Agüimes-Cuba Relationship’, by historian Miguel Padrón Alemán.

The zanga tournament, scheduled for July 24 at the murga's venue, will add a playful and competitive touch, while the community gathering at the Camping de Temisas on July 25 will close the programme with a festive and family-friendly atmosphere. Some of these activities are funded by the support programme for the associative movement of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, and the Agüimes Town Hall collaborates by providing spaces for the talks.

The mayor highlights the role of associations

During the meeting, Mayor Óscar Hernández praised the work of the associations in the municipality, highlighting their ability to generate social cohesion and energise cultural life. “Groups like Los Serenquenquenes are essential for keeping the associative fabric of Agüimes alive,” said the mayor, who emphasised the intense activity they carry out throughout the year. The ACDR Los Serenquenquenes, founded in 1982, is one of the most awarded murgas of the Carnival of the Canary Islands, with more than four decades of history and a humour that has made it a reference.

The residents of Agüimes will be able to enjoy these activities mostly for free, except for those that require prior registration. The Cultural Week not only offers entertainment but also promotes reflection on current issues such as climate change or historical ties with Cuba. An opportunity to learn, laugh and share in community.
