A Local Police intervention in Puerto de la Cruz prevented a person from falling from the roof of Casa Iriarte, a building approximately twenty meters high, on the morning of Wednesday, July 15. The alert was received at 09:40 hours through the Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES 112), and the agents confirmed upon arrival that the person was next to the edge of the roof, in immediate danger.
The operation was coordinated and swift. While one officer established communication with the affected individual and managed to keep their attention, two others accessed the roof from inside the building through a difficult-to-reach area. At the moment the person made a move towards the ledge, the agents grabbed them and moved them to a safe interior area. Due to the strong resistance offered, it was necessary to restrain them to ensure their integrity and the safety of all involved.
The characteristics of the building, the height, and the complexity of leaving the roof required the mobilization of the Tenerife Fire Consortium, which was responsible for securing the extraction and descent to the public road. Throughout the operation, the area remained cordoned off due to the high presence of pedestrians, which avoided additional risks. National Police agents also participated, while the Canary Emergency Service provided medical assistance to the affected person and transported them to a hospital.
The mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Leopoldo Afonso, who is also the municipal head of the Citizen Security area, expressed his gratitude to the agents involved in the operation. "I want to convey, on behalf of the entire municipal corporation and the citizens of Puerto de la Cruz, our deep appreciation to the Local Police agents for their extraordinary work, professionalism, and ongoing commitment to protecting the life and safety of individuals," said the mayor.
"The calmness, mediation skills, and coordination demonstrated in an extremely complex situation prevented a tragedy. Actions like this highlight the preparation and public service vocation of our Local Police."
Afonso extended the recognition to CECOES 112, the Tenerife Fire Consortium, the National Police, and the Canary Emergency Service, emphasizing that "the collaboration between all security and emergency services was decisive." The Local Police of Puerto de la Cruz has taken charge of the proceedings and the preparation of the corresponding reports.
This incident is part of a municipal strategy aimed at reinforcing citizen security, prevention, and police proximity, with special attention to the quality of the municipality as a tourist destination. According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, crime in Puerto de la Cruz decreased by 13.56% in 2025 compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the City Council has allocated over 600,000 euros to strengthen the Local Police.
Among the measures adopted are the incorporation of six new motorcycles to improve mobility and response speed, as well as electric guns, new uniforms, and a drone. The staff has also been reinforced with two new agents. "We will continue to provide our Local Police with the necessary human and material resources to perform their work with maximum guarantees. Security, prevention, and close attention to citizens are a priority," concluded Afonso.
The intervention on Wednesday highlights the importance of coordination among the different security and emergency bodies. The fact that the person was rescued alive and taken to a hospital underscores the effectiveness of the action protocol in extreme situations.
