Candelaria's Town Hall has closed the project 'Improving Employability and Landscape of Candelaria 2025', which has provided work and training to 25 people over eight months.
Candelaria's Town Hall concluded this Wednesday the project 'Improving Employability and Landscape of Candelaria 2025', an employment and training initiative aimed at long-term unemployed individuals. The mayor, Mari Brito, and the councillor for Works and Services, Jorge Baute, attended the closing event and bid farewell to the students just before the holiday period, scheduled for next week.
The project started on December 1 and ends on August 31. It was funded by a grant from the Canary Islands Employment Service of €354,898.89, financed with funds from the State Public Employment Service, to which the council added a municipal contribution equivalent to 10% of the total cost.
During these months, a total of 25 people were hired: one teacher, one administrative assistant, one foreman, and 22 student-workers classified as street cleaning labourers. The contracts ran from December 22 to August 21, meaning eight months of work and training activities.
The group is mainly composed of women over 45 years old, with more than a third of them being over 60. Both the mayor and the councillor expressed their gratitude to the students for their work and showed their satisfaction with the training acquired, which significantly improves their chances of finding employment. They both highlighted that these are serious and committed individuals, and assured that the Town Hall will continue to support them in their job search through the Employment and Local Development Agency.
The training results validate the effort: 90% of the students have passed the key competencies of Level 2 in Mathematics and Spanish Language. In Level 3, 85.7% passed Spanish Language and 76.2% passed Mathematics. Additionally, there were a dozen complementary training actions aimed at improving professional qualifications.
Beyond the figures, the project has had a significant personal impact on the participants. According to the Town Hall, it has facilitated the recovery of work habits, reinforced self-esteem, and helped combat the isolation that often accompanies prolonged unemployment. Moreover, by performing cleaning and maintenance tasks in the municipality's public spaces, the participants have actively contributed to improving the environment and the quality of life for all citizens of Candelaria.
This type of initiative, framed within the calls of the Canary Islands Employment Service, aims precisely to offer a second chance to those who have been out of the labour market for some time. The combination of paid employment and formal training allows participants to obtain certificates that enhance their CVs and open doors in sectors such as street cleaning or municipal services.
The Town Hall has emphasised its commitment to continue promoting similar programmes in the future, as long as funding is available. For interested individuals, the Employment and Local Development Agency of Candelaria offers information and advice on upcoming calls and other employment insertion resources.
The closure of the project coincides with the beginning of the summer period, a time when many municipalities strengthen their cleaning and maintenance services. The experience gained by these workers could facilitate their incorporation into new temporary hires or employment programmes that may be launched soon.
